THAT YOUR GOING TO GAIN MOST OF THE WEIGHT BACK!

You would think when each and everyone one of us had thought, and searched this surgery we were ready. But we are not...Its not that the dr's failed us or even the surgery....We got big for a reason, and the trick to not gaining the weight back, is understand how it got there, why it got there, and whats eating at us to be unhappy again....

I was 24 yrs old when I got weightloss surgery, and my life had never even started, but once the weight fell off, my life was turned on...and then LIFE really gave me a whammy, my parents lost there restaurang our house, my father became severely ill in another country, when he was visiting...and through the mix of it all, i was soppose to hold it all together for my family with my brother, get us out of debt, and cook and clean, and make sure my mom was stable enough mentally to deal with my father, lemme tell you it was enough to make anyone go bonkers, and i met a guy who i thought would be a lasting partner but ended up doing the chacha on my heart...through it all i managed to keep my weight down, because of that wonderful tool, my habits hadnt caught on.... i was 5 yrs out, and slowly the weight crept back, and then i visited my parents in greece and even though i know why the weight came back.
This time something clicked, I knew it didnt belong on me, all the other times before i thought id understood that fat isnt healthy and u shouldnt be fat, but this time i understood  the way i was after surgery was the right way, i just have to get myself there the healthy way, and talk through my issues, because i talked my way through food back to the place i didnt want to be in....

i had surgery at 236, and got down t 154, i gained back at started at 240, and since May Im n ow 208, im working on getting down to a healthy weight, but i go regularly  to the gym, and i follow what is right for me, i took out sugars, and white flower, no sodas, and one coffee a day, if i have, i have lots of fruits and veges and greek yogurt with my proteins... and plenty of water.... and i go to therapy once a month to ground me, see where iam at, and i will make an appt to see my dr for my b12 shots, i havent gained up the courage to see him and say, yes i failed you, but look i took action...that my friends is my neext feet....But its like were all addicts and when we gain our weight back, we have to get back on our wagon.... but since food is a nessesity, we need to take it one day at a time, and understand why we eat, and whats eating at us...and not rush our mind...and if were hurt, we need to feel it, and not numb it out...I admit with all I dealt with....i simply checked out....but i realized before i ever do that again, wich i dont think i will, i will keep checking in with myself and my feelings before i give up...because giving up, isnt worth giving up the happiness you can regive yourself.

Hi Laura- I am alone too.  I can see a diabetic dietitian and she is nice but I have no surgeon, no support group and no bariatric dietitian.  I have a family doctor that is very nice and willing to draw whatever labs I ask for...they are always normal though.  How do you feel your surgery has failed you?  It looks like you have lost almost 80 lbs.  I think that is very good...no?  Take care,  Daisy

I am glad you saw a therapist.  My insurance required that I meet with a therapist before surgery.  I think all people should meet with a behaviorist before surgery.  I think many people could do just as well without the surgery because afterward they honestly feel that food issues not physical issues were causing their weight issues.  I have PCOS and insulin resistance diabetes so I still battle the physical weight issues.  You might want to check out my dessert recipes on my profile page.  Often people diet and don't eat tasty desserts and then go crazy over the real thing and lose control.  It sounds like you had a good RNY though if you need B 12 supplements.   I have a very short bypass so my doctor said I don't even need to have blood work drawn anymore.  At the most I take a Flinstones vitamin.  You might want to check out the calories and carbohydrates in your Greek yogurt.  They use sugar to sweeten them.  You can always get your protein from a lean piece of meat or fish.  The gym is a good thing but actually check out the calories you burn.  Most people overestimate calories burned.  You can't underestimate the good of building muscle on metabolism though.  I go every day to my gym since 2002.  Considering I lost a bunch of weight before surgery the only part of me I would have PS on is my stomach.  Arms and legs are OK.  Lastly you are Greek!  My husband and his family are Greek.  You are the strongest heritage to descend from.  You are from an ancient culture.  Your ancestors have survived everything.  You need to look within yourself for strength.  I assure you that you are a very strong woman.  My/his relatives are thankful and proud of being Greek and will tell you that if you ask them...and even if you don't ask them  !  Seriously, you should be too!  Never, ever let yourself "check out" again.  Greek women are the strongest in the world.  You are a Greek woman!  Daisy

Daisy,
Well for one, i never said I wasnt proud to be greek, im very proud, and I know im strong, i know nuthing can break me, but all my life, i never did anything formyself, as you greek families take care of greek families, and when i decided to do gastric bypass for myself, i literally was thrown under the bus by life... ANYWAYS :)
I do estimate calories, and my greek yogurt that i eat, is the best one, it has lil c arbs, 9 carbs, and no sugar, and 17 grams of protien and 0 fat, everyone, even DR oz always mentions it...

the bottom line is the weight can come back but you gottabe willing to work at it and with ur self to give urself ultimate happiness, and i did :)

Well good I am glad you recognize your inner strength.  What brand yogurt do you eat?  My regular NSA yogurt has almost 20 gms of carbs and 1/2 the protein.  I am glad I mentioned it.  I am still working at this whole weight loss thing.  Sounds like you are on the road to lasting success.  Check in now and then to give us failures a little hope and nudge. Daisy

Unless you actually change your habits (preferably BEFORE you have surgery), the odds are that you WILL regain a lot of your weight.

That's the huge advantage that people in the MOVE program at the VA have.  They don't get approved for surgery until, and unless, they have made the psychological adjustments necessary to succeed.

I was 65 when I had my surgery, I am a totaly couch potato, I completely HATE exercise (I got enough of that during my 10 years in the Army to last a lifetime and then some).

I am a very good cook (I cook Chinese, Mexican Italian, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, French, German and American food), and I am a pretty good baker too.  I love to eat, and to prepare foods for my friends and family.  I still do that, at least once or twice a week.

If you are NOT psychologically prepared to make permanent life style changes, then the odds are high that you will fail.  So, what to do?

Go get some counseling and deal with your demons.  There is absolutely no physical reason why any of us have to fail at weight loss.  It is psychological issues that do us in, for the vast majority of us.  So, get some help and deal with that aspect.

It is NOT too late for success.  You can reach goal, and you CAN remain at goal.

Me, well I weigh myself every Sunday morning.  If I get to the point that I am 5 pounds over my lowest weight, I go right back on program.  Otherwise, I eat whatever I want, until I am full.  I then stop, and I do NOT graze throughout the day.

The vast majority of people that regain their weight simply refuse to keep eating at a healthy level, and to exercise.  I still go out, 3 days each week, and walk a minimum of 3 miles.  I don't particularly enjoy it, but I need to do it for my health.  I eat till I am full, and then I stop.  I refuse to eat between meals.

When cooking, I now truly just taste something.  I don't eat several spoons full, or have a dish of it, to "check it for seasoning", etc.  I take just enough to actually taste it, and stop.

If an older man like me can do this (I was 65 when I had my surgery done, I am 67 now and I have moderately severe arthritis plus two severe compression fractures in my spine), I know darn good and well that you younger folks can.

It is in YOUR control, whether you succeed or fail.  Nobody is holding a gun to your head, threatening to kill you if you do not eat more than you should.  So, take control of your life, and get yourself to goal.

YOU CAN DO THIS, YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS, SO JUST MAKE YOURSELF DO IT!
