VSG Failure?

I am scheduled to have the VSG in a few weeks. However one question I have for people that have the VSG over time.. I can't seem to figure out, with the VSG can you stretch your stomach so it is the same size it was before you had surgery?

For those that have gained weight on VSG or another surgery, do you still have some restriction and are you just eating the wrong foods, or do you no longer feel you have restriction? Would you have gained more weight back if you didn't have the WLS?

My understanding is that after a year, you will have a little more room in your stomach than at surgery time.  However, you will never have the room you had prior to surgery.  The part of the stomach tissue left after VSG is not as elastic as the part of the stomach removed.  I hope this answers part of your question.  I can't answer to much more as I am just a little over 4 months out myself and am still only able to eat 1/4 cup of dense protein at a meal.

I never felt restriction from my RNY.  I could tolerate all food without any consequences.  I can eat too much food and the wrong foods.  I lost 110 lbs before surgery over several years losing from 276 lbs. to 167 lbs.  I kept it off from 2002 to 2005 when I regained 30 lbs. on purpose to qualify for surgery.  I wouldn't have gained back the weight if I hadn't had the RNY because I made lifestyle changes that I was used to.  Now I have to eat more than before the RNY.  Food dumps into my system quickly raising my blood sugar and then it falls quickly making me starving hungry.  I measured my blood sugar after a meal recently and it was 213 and 30 minutes later it was 73.  Now I have to eat at least 6 meals per day to keep my blood sugar from crashing.  That never happened before my RNY.  As far as your surgery though, I don't think they remove the valve at the bottom of the stomach with a VSG so food doesn't dump into your system like after some RNYs.  I feel confident you will make your surgery work.  Best of luck with you upcoming surgery.  Daisy

I had a VSG 2 years ago.  I HAVE MOST DEFINATELY STRETCHED MY STOMACH. I MOST DEFINATELY can eat more than the first year. BUT NOOOOO WHERE NEAR what I was able to eat  PRIOR to VSG.  Your VSG stomach will NEVER EVER hold the amounts of food you are able to eat now.  After all that swelling goes down, and your stomach is completely healed after about 6 months you WILL gradually be able to eat more and then MORE if you don't heed your stomach and NOT your head.

I was an overeater pre-op and Im an overeater post op. I needed help but didn't get it.  Used to have 5 MINI meals. Now they are LARGER portions. I feel that restriction to this day but STILL overdo it to the point of being stuffed and hurting!

I was a runaway train without surgery though. I had VSG surgery because I got sick with diabetes II . I would have gained and kept gaining. I lost a ton of weight post op, then got injured exercise took a nose dive and then mindful eating took a nose dive, and Ive regained all but 26 pounds of original weight.  I had to buy fat clothes again, and I swore I wouldn't.
I AM a runaway train NOW! and Im sick once again! Im desperately trying to put the brakes on since I just got diagnosed with gallstones (from high protein high fat diet) no one told me I had to pay attention to the fats in the protein I was eating. I knew the sugar was a prob though so jus****ched that!

There are a ton of success stories with VSG. Im not one of them. Im trying to get the help that I should of gotten in the first place.

Yes I hear your concerns. Change is invariable. Keep OH foremost for online support, have a good outside support system and stay on top of this. A VSG is forever! Exercise and  mindful eating needs to be too!  Be good to yourself! The number one regret about VSG surgery is I DIDN"T DO IT SOONER.  I to this day agree with that.

VSG007... thank you for sharing your experience... I'm sorry to hear you have regained most of your weight. Do you think your sleeve will still help you in the future or is it too stretched out now? What kinds of foods did you eat that stretched it out or was it low carb foods but just too much? Do you have any suggestions on dealing with portion control issues? I thought that this surgery would fix that issue for me.

I had VSG on 9/13/96 In the beginning the weight loss went well and then after 3-4 month it tapered off.  I was very concerned thinking I was either eating to much, the wrong thing or I had stretched my stomach.  I finally worked up the nerve to make an appointment with my Bariatriciain and my RD I shared my frustrations with them because I had only lost about 40 lbs in 11 months while others insupport group had lost enormous amounts of weight.  Initially the Dr. thought I was eating to much thus the lack of weight loss, she administered a test known as the MED-GEM which test your resting metabolic rate and my intake allowed close to 2,000 calories per day to sustain current weight, well I was not coming anywhere near that amount come to find out to everyones surprise I was consuming roughly 600-700 calories per day and had forced my body into starvation mode!  I needed to consume at least 1688 calories per day to loose 2 lbs per week.  I haven't quite reached that number yet but I have tried to eat more over the last 6 weeks and I have lost 15 lbs. I feel renewed and inspired!  Please pray for me on my WLS  journey as I continue to reach my goal weight!

This post has been very beneficial!!!  Thank you.  VSG can you quantify how you went about stretching your sleeve.  Would you just force food down?  Have you always ate until being uncomfortable?
