I have been feeling like I have been going crazy this past month!  I have often times thought about checking myself into a mental hospital!  Has anyone ever heard of ............

POST OPPERATIVE DEPRESSION, or POST SURGICAL DEPRESSION?

I found out about it doing a search about the causes of depression. Then I Googled it. I read that it can occur immediately after surgery as well as up to months later. I am about 3 months post-op. Lately, I have been having severe anxiety attacks, severe depression, crying spells, even times throwing tantrums!  Has anyone else heard about this? Has anyone else gone through it?  Is there anyway out of it without being put on antidepressants?  I was on those in the past and had trouble tolerating them. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Do you see the glass as half empty or half full? I say, what difference does it make--I paid for a full glass,so either way I am getting jipped!!!

It's been a long time but I do remember that same feeling. For me it was right around 3 months out and was until I got more protein and nutrition in my body. I clearly noticed it when, one night I made a big pot of chicken noodle soup. I ate just the chicken and broth. After two meals of this I significantly noticed a HUGE change in my attitude and the way I felt! I was feeling so much better and as long as I stayed on that increased protein and nutrients I was really great.
Try to change or up your protein and see if that helps. Also, are you making sure you are getting in good exercise every day? That will help too. Exercise is a natural antidepressant.
What you are feeling is totally normal from what I remember. Just take it day by day and I am sure you will start feeling better soon.

I haven't had the surgery yet, but I've heard about this. So you're not alone. Hope you start to feel better, and don't be afraid to get help if you need it! A lot of surgeons have in person support groups, and sometimes it helps to just be around people who are going through the same thing.  Good luck!

yES, WHAT YOU ARE FEEELING IS QUITE COMMON... Be sure to let our surgeon and support staff know.. Don't be afraid to ask for help.  Rememer -- you had MAJOR surgery, are changing many life habits and are experiencing many changes in your body.

Take a deep breath, give yourself  hug and be sure to speak up loud and clear with your sugreon's office!

THis must be what I am going through I am 10 days out and I feel like I have done this surgery for no reason.  I am so upset I feel kind of like some of those people who sees advertisments for something and then once its sold it does away.  I am in pain and feel like I am going crazy.  I have been having the crying spells and crying about nothing big just because.   I had the coversation with my husband about how I am going to die in pain and fat.  Because this surgery is not going to work.  And Ive already made the mistake by having the surgery.

I totally understand how you feel! Give it time. It gets better. The surgery will work! I had the same worries and I am 8yrs out as of 7/9/2010. It is a rollercoaster of emotions so keep in communication with people who can offer you support. Unfortunately not everyone will be supportive. You will definitely find out who you have healthy relationships with and who your true friends are. You have gone through a major surgery and changed how your insides work. It takes time for your mind to catch up with all the changes in your body. It is NOT YOU!!! I can't stress that to you enough. Stop beating yourself up. You WILL do this and you will be successful. Believe it! In about 2 weeks you will probably lose about 20lbs and it will just continue as long as you follow the guidelines your doctor gave you. When are you scheduled to see the doc again for a follow-up? See if there is a local support group and if possible, find a counselor who specializes in eating disorders. At the worst you may be going through a bout of depression that causes the chemicals in your brain to be unbalanced. A doctor can diagnose whether that is what's going on and treat you with medication if needed. My best advice is to keep yourself busy, take walks, drink lots of water, eat plenty of protein and take supplements B12, iron etc. THINK POSITIVE!! What you believe, you will achieve! If I could do one thing over, I would take more pictures along the way to mark my progress. Even when my clothes were baggy, I still didn't feel smaller. The mirror can lie, but pictures don't. Celebrate every little achievement like getting 8 glasses of water per day, 100 grams of protein per day, moderately walking 15 mins (go to the mall and window shop  for all the cute clothes you will be able to wear) Get a pedicure and pamper yourself. You are starting a lifelong journey of learning how to love yourself more every day. Let me know if this makes sense or if there is anything else I can help you with.
LOVE & Best wishes,

Chrisy
