STOMAPHYX questions.
My surgeon is wanting to do the Stomaphyx procedure on me in 2 weeks. It is not for weight regain, it is to keep me from dumping so much. He said my stoma healed too large and so ALL the food I eat is dumping out of my pouch too quickly and making me sick.
I am scared to lose more weight (I am at a healthy 150 now). I am also wondering about pain, long term results, complications, etc. I addressed all of these with him and he assured me it is safe, but I would just like answers from anyone who has actually had the procedure.
If you have had the procedure please tell me a little more of what to expect as far as recovery and long term results.
THANKS so much!!!

I have yet to see anyone say they're happy with this procedure---but you're the first person I've seen considering having it for this reason.
I believe that before I had this done, I'd consider getting my pouch revised into a Sleeve, or, if you want to keep your malabsorption, a DS. Either would give you back your pylorus, the stomach's 'normal' emptying port, and eliminate dumping altogether.

Yes, it is. That's how revisions from the RNY to the DS are done---the surgeon puts the stomach back together, then does a sleeve gastrectomy. The pylorus occassionally won't 'wake up', but almost all of the time it does. The longer it's been out of use the greater the likelihood it won't function again. But we have one DSer who was revised after having had his RNY for 28 years, and his is working just fine!
I was examined for this procedure and I was told that my pouch was too SMALL for the procedure and I have re-gained ALL my weight. Doctor told me that the reason I am hungry all the time is that the opening to my pouch and intestine is too large and that the pouch empties too FAST. In fact the pouch is so small they can't do the procedure. I wonder if there is anything that can help with that opening being too large? I am hungry ALL the time... food goes right on through me. I look like I never had weight loss surgery. In fact I do NOT even tell people I had it anymore because they look at me like I am nutz!
Scheduled for a Revision RNY to RNY and a Hiatal Hernia Repair on 5/9/2011... Day after Mother's Day is my Day!
My stoma is enlarged, too. It is not my pouch that stretched. The big stoma causes excessive dumping and diarhea, too. If stomaphyx is billed to insurance as a fix for "dumping syndrome" instead of weight regain, etc. insurance will cover it. Mine will anyways.
Best of luck on this craz, LONG journey we are all on. :)
