I'm trying to get a rny revision- been 16yrs since my initial surgery.  regaining wt within the pass 4 yrs- started from 350 lbs to 155lbs in 12months- 12 yrs of maintaining then last 4 yrs all hell broke loose.  LOL.  went to see a surgeon, he sent me for upper GI and they discovered the hiatal hernia sitting right above my stomach pouch.....would this make me regain wt?  i have the worst heartburn known to man; taking nexum which is not helping. I know i'm able to eat more, but get sick to my stomach most of the time, have to be very picky in what I eat, can't eat before bed.......and a whole lot of other things happening because of the wt gain and ernia combo.

I'm hoping my surgeon agrees to the revision and hernia repair.  What is the healing time?  hospital stay? BTW I had open RNY

The hiatal hernia itself isn't going to cause weight gain but eating to relieve the burn could cause weight gain.  A hiatal hernia doesn't change the calories you consume.

What is key here is the size of your stoma.  Do you know the size of that?

Hey Doreen, I also had RNY July 07, and last month had endoscopy and found H-Hernia and pre-cancer. Pre-cancer, another story but the H-Hernia is more of a thorn in the side rather than a major health issue. That will go away with the reconstruct or you can live with it.

One thing you may want to consider is that the acid may be coming from your repository stomach below. Sometimes you can get ulcers or something going on below (which is my case) and that can cause acid. Most people will get looked at for Esophogial Barrets, etc and find out it is acid from your sealed off stomach. Keep in mind that it still produces acids, etc and if there is an ulcer going on or something funky, you'll definately pay for it.

So what I got put on is 40mg of protonix 1 time daily and 150mg of Randatine 2 x a day. The next day, acid was gone and now the hernia only comes into play when you dump eating something, or are sick and end up hurling. You'll feel it then for sure. But otherwise you can live with it and those two meds work perfect in tandem.

I hope this helps and I from one HH to another, didn't want you to worry about this. GI specialist says 1 in 10 folks have an HH. Good luck with your procedure if you get it reconstructed.

Thanks Jeff.  This thing have me feeling and lookiing like I'm prego, I'm going on 48 yrs old and its not a good feeling or look.  Do the HH make you gain wt?  It seem like I'm getting better by the min.  Some history   orig wt 1994 350l bs- 1996 155lbs - 2002 180lbs looking better and feeling great.  2007 215lbs- 3/2010 265lbs out of control.  I need that revision bad.  See my surgeon this Friday-

Well went to see the surgeon today- after my upper gi test.  YES I have a very large hiatal hernia and NO my stoma didn't stregth, so he said no to my revision request and explained how dangerouse my hernia is and I should have surgery soon to get  it fixed.  I'm happy and sad at the same time, because I'm thinking it was my pouch that stregth and all i needed was the revisioon to make everything ok again, but Nooooooooooooooo.  I have the hernia issue.  Was told the surgery for hernia repair isn't as dangerous as the revision......HENCE PROTEIN SHAKES AND 2 SMALL MEALS.....

The surgeon also mentioned something about a Rose procedure, (that he doesnt do) but that all depends on what the surgeon sees when he fixes my hernia...

Sadly, the ROSE procedure is just as much of a flop as StomaPhyx.  They are both a total waste of money.  The only people pushing it are those who work for a doc back east that does the surgery type.  No "real" patients have ever posted that it worked (Revision board).

Doreen,

I could have written this post myself...even the ALL hell breaking loose...that's one my favorite phrases...lol.

I am 7 years post-op RNY, was 502, lost to 280 had a 2 year stall at 330 before getting down to 280...had panni removed was down to 245 in August of 2007 and then weight started creeping back on, and now I'm at 380 and have burning in my throat every day. I've also been taking nexium for a year and it no longer is helping. I have an upper GI a couple weeks ago and they reconfirmed a hiatal hernia (was told about one in 2004 but no other issues so no big deal at the time) and reflux, there was a spot they wanted looked at for Barrett's. I'm having an upper endoscopy tomorrow to take a look inside. I too find myself eating to keep the burning away.

Any new news on the hiatal hernia repair? I'm curious how they do it post RNY? My RNY was open also.

Hello

I went to see my bariatric surgeon today; well he told me my HH was large!!!! thats a reason why I'm looking prego.  LOL  He is scheduling surgery for mid-May and not sure if he can actually get to the HH because of its location.......may have to do a open procedure just like my bypass 16 yrs ago.  He said tht my pouch is still intact, but my stoma might have stregthed- hence the more food intake.  I just want him to strink my pouch just alittle, because I need to get this wt off soon.

I'll keep in touch

Doreen

I saw my surgeon's nutritionist today....I had some food days logged at 1800...1400 and 1600...I know those aren't good...but he even said my 1283 cals day wasn't good enough...under 1200...OMG I wanted to gnaw my arm off that day! And my throat is constantly burning so I graze...he was really understanding...he said definately need the endoscopy to see what the problem is and they were pulling up the Upper GI to view it on the comp....so we shall see.
