7 Weeks Post Op and Need Help

Hello,

I am nearly 7 weeks post-op from Gastic Bypass.  In the 6th week, the scales showed I had lost about 26 lbs.  I was surpsied because I thought I'd be losing faster.  However, in this week--the 7th--the scales say I have now gained about 6 lbs from last week??!!  I almost cried.  I am only eating 400-500 calories a day, no way could I have gained weight.

I feel like I am not losing nearly as I should be.  Can anyone help??

Thanks

Hi There

I know how frustrating that weight gain is.  I am a VERY slow loser....I am 14 weeks out and only down 39 pounds.  Also, I have found that I will be coming down and all of the sudden be up about 5 pounds for a week.  The extra pounds do fall off, but this is the strangest weight loss journey I have ever been on.

You may want to increase your calories a bit, ask your nutritionist....mine told me to aim for 800-1200 per day.
She also said that my large pre-op weight loss would mean a slower post op loss, and for some reason, she has found that diabetic women lose slower.  It is very discouraging to be losing so slowly, though, and go through these gains.  Sometimes I feel like a failure already.  But one of my co workers was an extremely slow loser after her RNY, and she still hit her goal and maintained it for 4 years.  I try to keep that as my encouragement.

Oh yeah, my exercise habits have been poor the last month....I have pretty much been hibernating from the cold weather, and I think my weight loss reflects this.  I definitely need to get back on track.

Those 6 pounds WILL drop off and you WILL start losing again. Hang in there, I will too!

Cheryl

I think my weightloss is slow but I don't mind it. I think it helps with the excess skin that I am going to have. I have noticed that my weight go up a few lbs around my period and then poof I drop those and some....just be patient with it.

Thanks for the tips!  I am hoping that was the case last week for me as well as I was weighed during my menstrual cycle.  I am hoping all that is gone now......  I just need to learn patience.

Hi,

My suggestions aren't always accepted lol but I will share them with you anyway.  Yes, you need to eat healthy and increase your intake.  Your body needs fuel to function and maintain good health.  Second, you may want to consider seeing a counseler IF you have fears about food and issues that are keeping you in a panic mode.  Lastly, if you can, use your clothes as a measure of success and not the scale.  I know, this one is a toughy.  The satisfaction in watching your body shrink can be as rewarding as the numbers on the scale.  Yea, just a personal opinion on that one, but think about it.

Congratulations on your success thus far.  Relax and enjoy your journey!

Clueless about weight loss and weight loss surgery of any kind.

I do apprecaite your suggestions!  I am trying to increase my daily intake  but only being 7 weeks out, am finding it very difficult to consume much more.  I may see a counselor as well!  And, as far as the clothes, I am wearing things I haven't been able to get into in about 7 years so something is working.  I guess I just need to quit relying on the scale so much.....

Thanks!

I am always amazed when I read these kind of posts, what in the world was happening to you prior to surgery??? Were you losing five pounds a week with the guarantee of keeping it off with little to moderate effort??  If so I guess you have a right to be disappointed.
If you were like me and so many others whose goal was on not gaining anymore because it had become almost impossible to lose wt; then, I think you need to step back and look more seriously at what is going on. Depending on where you start out the rate of wt loss is different for each person. When was the last time you lost 26 pounds in 5 weeks??  I could never do that before surgery.  Get over it  follow the rules and enjoy wt loss. Next you are going to stall and fall apart because your wt loss has slowed down.
You are letting the days slip away without seeing the joy in them.

I am 5 weeks out and have lost 30 lbs. I know that is amazing, but like you, for the last week and 1/2 I have gained 4lbs, then lost 2, then gained 2, then lost 3 then gained 1. I am eating right and it does get frustrating. I keep waiting for this stall to start moving again. It has to. We can't live on what we eat and not lose this fat that is stored in our bodies. Keep up you spirit. I will keep you in my prayers and when I ask God to help move this thing along, I will ask for you too.
