Symptoms, usually. But sometimes a radiological exam.
A slipped band may cause reflux and/or the patient may suddenly feel like the bad is too tight.
With erosion, there are various symptoms...maybe pain, maybe an infection at the port, maybe loss of restriction when there was good restriction before.
And there are other symptoms of other problems.
It might be easier if you mentioned what it is you are experiencing.

Hi,
For me, when my band slipped (which I didn't know at the time but now looking back at it and having spoken with the surgeon)... there was pain. Awful pain in my lower back. It was excruciating pain. Also, as the day went on, I could eat fine in the morning and less at noon and by the time it was around 5 or 6 pm, I could hardly eat anything. My stomach would blow up like a giant baloon. And here's the clincher... I would wake up every night throwing up in the middle of the night. This went on for me for several months. I just thought I had the flue or something. Finally, the pain got so bad that I could hardly breathe and I suffered all through the night. I took myself to my sureon's office at 8 am the next morning and I was admitted to the hospital by noon and surgery by 5 pm.
I hope this has answered some of your questions. Good luck to you!

Hi Nancy, my name is Lucie,
I had the band July 1st and the first three months I actually gained 3lbs...after loosing 10lbs for the pre op. Anyway, everything was going fine with a few "bounces" of food every week, but I just figured I ate too much.
Then, a few weeks ago, severe acid reflux took hold of me, I tried Prilosec, and now my surgeon has prescribed Nexium...super duper expensive...and I have insurance. I am so worried my band has slipped and especially when you said your back has ached...my back is aching too, especially after a meal...very small meal. My problem is I'm staying in Texas for the winter and my surgeon is in Colorado. No other surgeon wants to help me...on an appointment basis, but I'm sure they would if it were an emergency situation.
Did your doctor ever say why your back hurt? Also, did you bounce water? That is what's happening with me..I can eat a meal without fluids, but then after an hour, I bounce water. OK, thanks for taking the time and hopefully replying...Luc

I just got my slip diagnosise today. It started with a serious bout of reflux to the point where I felt like I was have a heart attack from the chest pains.
Now even with all my fluid out I would have soup and felt like I ate 10lbs of food. I'm to the point where I can't even eat right now. So I'm on fluids.
Just lots of pain and sudden restriction. If it's suspected as for an upper GI to find out.
I've got a call in my surgeon's office to get the process rolling. The fact that I can't eat (only on liquids right now) I'm hoping will fast track the process.
