Enlarged Stoma - Considering ROSE Revision
I failed RNY gastric bypass 5 years ago due to an enlarged stoma (due to a lack of scar tissue). I had minimal weight loss within one year, but never regained. I've had numerous tests that verify I have an enlarged stoma. Last week I had an upper endoscopy to investigate severe reflux. Again, the scope verified that I have a very small pouch (because it's never been used!!!), and a signifcantly enlarged stoma.
I'm considering paying out of pocket for the ROSE procedure with Dr. Ujiki in Chicago. Anyone had the ROSE or know where I can find statistics about it's success/failure rate.
Thanks.

Hi there!
I am convinced that I have an enlarged stoma and my pouch is stretched. I lost 90lbs and at about 2.5 yrs maintained at 155-160 (I was satisfied at that weight - my clothes fit good, I looked good, etc...). I noticed at the time that I wasn't getting the fullness/restriction as I was used too but as long as I wasn't gaining weight I wasn't going to worry about it.
Then in April I had a hysterectomy and I have gained 22 lbs since. At my 3 yr appointment in July I had only gained 6 so my surgeon wasn't concerned. The last 15 have come on quickly. I am HUNGRY all the time and feel absolutely no fullness or restriction...
My surgeon wanted me to do a "pouch reset" program with his in office nutritionist but it costs $90 a week! I can't pay that. Besides the whole reason I had RNY was because diets don't work for me!!
Anyway - the point of my rant is that I am considering the Stompaphyx procedure since I do not have a large amount of weight to lose to get to goal (150-155). I just want the restriction back. We'll see if insurance covers it.
Here's a website that has some info on the ROSE:

Good Luck!

From what I have read on this OH site there has not been very good long term results with the less evasive procedures like the ROSE, Stomaphyx and Scheletherapy. And as far as short term have been very limited.
I would suggest posting your questions on the "revision" board. I see others posting there as well about these procedures and there have been a few who have had them, but unfortunately they are not posting very good results past the post liquid diet you have to be on.
Good luck.

I had the ROSE procedure on June 30, 2009 and am down 50lbs. The procedure is working for me, however I am also working to make the procedure a success. I eat protien first, exercise and eat the orginial way that I ate when I have the RNY. I hope this helps and I can answer any questions that you have. Good Luck
