VSG on 08/26/08 with
My relationship with food changed entirely after having my VSG.

If it feels uncomfortable to overeat... then I don't.
If it feels yucky to eat sweets or fried foods, then I don't want them anymore.
Food is now fuel for me... not a coping measure.

This does not mean that I am not on guard against falling into old habits.... but I do think it's possible to change old habits.

I know my relationship changed too.  Because I avoid my trigger food...now I don't miss them.  But it does not for all.  And the further out you get the more you can eat....so that is why it is important to create healthy habits...

And it sounds like you have!

Have a great day!

My surgery date is 10/19/09 and I know I am a food addict.  Part of my path to this surgery has been Overeaters Anonymous.  I began in 1986 and lost over 100 pounds three different times.  It was so exciting while I was losing - the attention, the new clothes.  That attention became the addiction to spur me on with the weight loss but once things leveled out and people stopped paying attention I was left with myself (with whom I had done no work on and really had changed nothing) and I was right back into the food.  Knowing this is true about myself going in makes me a little scared about the surgery.  Nothing will change if nothing is changed.  I have begun working out in the gym but it is had been really hard.  For four weeks in a row I was going 3-4 times a week walking on the treadmill, then I stopped for two weeks.  In those two weeks my attitude got bad, I was overeating, etc.  This last week I have been back twice.  I am struggling with the food.  I really want to go into the surgery weighing less, sugar free and having been using the tools that I will be making a new part of my life.  I have a really good team in place.  I have a therapist, a nutritionist, a psychiatrist, friends to help me get to the gym and work out, friends who are really supportive of my WLS, everything anyone could need to be successful.  Now it is just up to me.

Still a little freaked out.

Well, it sounds like you are equipping yourself with the tools needed to be successful.

Everyone has a different journey with their WLS, I usually tell people (if you have had a child) remember how everyone tells you before you had your baby what it would be like.  And then you hear all these different stories about the different experiences?  Well, WLS is the same....every ones experience is different, and you will have to learn like you did when you had a child how to eat all over again.  This is not a bad thing....because during the "honeymoon" stage you will not be stomach hungry and it is easier to develop New and Healthy eating and exercise habits for a life time.  Once you start what works for you....just keep doing them.  After a while it will be 2nd nature.  I do the things I do to stay healthy and I don't even really think about it anymore....it just comes natural.  For 40 years I had bad habits and in 8 1/2 years I have been able change the bad habits and keep the healthy habits.

So, you see you can do it!  I know you have failed at so many diets before, but remember this is not a diet.  You can do this!!! Believe in yourself and tell yourself often....I CAN DO THIS!!!! And you will.

Take care,

Ginger

Thanks so much.  I do feel like I can do this and am excited about it all.  I turn 45 October 11th and surgery is October 19th.  I feel like I will be walking through this door to the second half of my life.
