RNY=Biggest Mistake of my Life

Honestly.

Just don't do it. It failed early; my surgeon abandoned me. I lost hope. Insurance doesn't want to pay to reverse it or fix it.

Friends don't let friends RNY.

I honestly think that the RNY will not be performed in the future. Eventually it's gonna come out that the proceedure has a really high failure rate.

What failed, exactly? And what do you mean by your surgeon abandoned you? He is obligated to see you through this and to address issues, no matter what they are!! Is he still practicing? Instead of giving up, I'll tell you what I WOULD DO...I would make myself such a pain in the ass at his clinic that he would HAVE to do something whether it be surgically fix the problem or make revisions or WHATEVER it is. And if that didn't work I would bombard your state's medical board and THEN I would also call every news channel in town and tell them what a charlatan he is (if he is) and how unhappy and miserable you are making this very big decision for a surgery. Was this doctor specialized in WLS? Did you do research? Did you do everything you were supposed to before surgery? True, complications will and do happen. True, every now and then you hear that 'something didn't work' and most of those stories turn out to be patients who didn't live their new life the way they were told to. I think you're wrong in the failure rate. No surgery is 100% failproof, and we know that going in...so please, take a good look at what you are doing in your life after surgery, what the Dr did wrong and needs to fix and how you can approach this bump in the road. Don't give up!! And don't roll over and play dead, either.

Lisa

I am sorry that you're feeling so hopeless, but this procedure DOES work, just look at all the happy, satisfied and thinner people there are just on this board! It's not a quick fix, as you must know, you do have to work at it. Some people still don't get this. There is no information from you

I ended it too quickly:

It's not a quick fix, as you must know, you do have to work at it. Some people still don't get this. There is no information from you about losing any weight, so have you lost any? It was 5 years ago so surely there must be SOME improvement?

You can read my other posts. Yes, I did research. Yes, he's considered a world-class doctor. Yes, I did the work and I went to the support groups religiously and logged on here. I was known as the "bird-eater." I was not a big old cheater. And, yes, I really did get abandoned at 12 months when his office said they couldn't help me with the stoma problem. He first did say he could help me and then must have changed his mind.
That was devastating. The procedure may turn out to be a great tool for some. It was not for me. It was the biggest mistake of my life.

I really don't know why people on the board don't think that Drs. abandon their patients. After a certain amount of time goes by, they do.
I realize people find that hard to believe, but it does happen. Do not assume it is the patient fault all the time.
If your read the post on this forum, you will see that it's mostly for lapband and rny people
For the success of many lapbanders dnd rny people ,they are the lucky ones that don't have the problems and certainly cannot relate to the other people.
I had the lapband, and yes the Dr.and staff turned their back on me. They where afraid of a lawsuit.  They even refused to help me find another Dr. After calling and finally finding one after alot of pain in my body I found one.I brought the upper Gi  CD with me.Had the appointment with this Dr. and 12 later was in surgery to remove the band. The band was soooo  tight I had been vomiting for months. I band had malfuctions, and could not put saline in or remove any. My life was in danger then. I really thought about getting the rny done, but after all the readling of this forum and others I really don't know.Yes we think Drs. don't  abandon their patients, but they do. The bottom line is money. And if the insurance doesnt pay for their error ,they don't know you, any longer.  Hopefully the next Dr. will accept your insurance and the problems will be solved.

I'm happy if your surgery works for you. Honest. It didn't for me.

I think that the last poster is right. My doctor clearly said he would help me in clinic, but when I called back to get the appt., I was told "no." I think that he was afraid to admit anything was wrong. Sent me packing with the problem.

And, if you are one of the ones who has problems and your doc is a creep, good luck in finding someone else who will touch you. Everyone wants to do a "virgin" surgery; very, very few will consent to even seeing other surgeon's patients--much less doing anything about the problem.

If it works for you, that's great. It didn't for me. I have no reason to be telling untruths here. I'm just telling my truth. I wish someone had said something like this to me 5+ years ago.

The optimal word is "your surgeon".  Not all surgeons will continue to see their patients.  And, some surgeons retire so you have NO ONE to go to when that happens.

Actually there are doctors out there that do abandon their patients. My doctor failed me. He  retired six months after my surgery. no referral doctor no eating plan no tools to move fwd. nothing. Not even a phone call to tell us he would no longer be practicing. I only found out because when I called to schedule an appointment with him the hospital where i had the surgery done at informed me. It was devastating. I had my surgery in 2000. I lost over 200lbs. and have since gained 100 back. It is partly my fault...I was involved in a tramatic car accident in 2003 and have bulging and herniated discs in my spine and have since been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and epstein barr. These issues make it difficult to exercise the way i should be. Don't knock someones feelings because they feel their doc abandoned them... we've all been down that road at some time or another...whether it's your doctor, family member, co-worker, or friends...it happens.
