Hi I'm going to get surgery very soon. I'm going for the Duodenal Switch over the RNY because of the failure rate with the RNY. I haven't heard about the DS failure rate. MY biggest fear is getting all this done and going back to being big. Plus i want to make shire I am making the right choice in surgery. Any advice will help.
Thanks

You might want to ask this question on the DS forum. Though I have seen and heard many failed RNY's (I am one of them), I've yet to hear of many failed DS's.  YMMV.

You can fail with any WLS, but it's much harder to sabotage the DS. I chose it after reading the published medical papers and knew I had the best chance to lose the weight and keep it off with the DS.

That said, it is possible to not lose as much as you like, or to lose too much. The percentage is pretty low, but it does happen, and is easily revised if that's the case (the intestinal part is easily revised to address either problem, but the stomach cannot be restored, and I don't know of any case where it ever needed to be).

The few I know who gained back weight (and it was like 20 - 30 lbs, not total regain) tried going back to the basic DS rules, which is high protein, high fat, low carb, and learned that the DS still works! That is a huge relief to me, as I had the same fears as you. Not only that, but those are food rules I can live with much easier than the RNY or band diets. If I could live on a diet, I wouldn't have needed surgery.

If you keep reading any studies on the differences WLS, and the revisions and failed surgery boards, as well as cruising the different surgery boards and read what issues those people are having (or lack of issues) you will become comfortable with your choice.

You have made a wise and informed decision if you decided on the DS. I am a revision from RnY to DS. Wish I had known of the DS when I first chose RnY; I did not. Less chance of regain, except maybe 10 or 20 or so,  but not all of your weight. You will have a working pyloric valve with theDs. No need to chew foods to mush. Easier to maintain loss. Can take NSAIDS if you have pain problems. Eating more like a "normal" person. And you will not need a revision, like me, if you go with the DS first and foremost. Good luck. Who is your surgeon?

Thanks for your advice!! I'M going through  DR.Chua in Wisconsin. He is really good but all the staff around him suck big time!!! They are so unprofessional and uninformed. Its been so hard dealing with them my surgery is postponed so many times. Then when I'M finally at the end they tell me I have to put a $1000.00 down payment till medicare covers it after surgery. I mean there are going to give the $ back but some one should of told be in the beginning not 8 months later. So I could of been saving. I got the $ and I should be scheduling my surgery next Friday. So I'm guessing mid July. HOPEFULLY

I could be wrong, maybe he is a new DS surgeon, but I have never heard of Dr. Chua doing the DS. Are you positive he does? That could be why they keep postponing. Has he tried to talk you into the RnY?  Please be very sure. You would want a surgeon who has done countless DS surgeries, not just a couple. A DS surgeon has to be top-notch and very proficient. Have you checked www.dsfacts.com or www.duodenalswitch.com for the most accurate list of DS surgeons? Do NOT count on the list on OH as it is not accurate at all.  My very best toyou.

I have been happy with my Duodenal Switch for the most part. I had it eight years ago. Only problem is the size of my stomach has streched over the years, have put on 20 pounds from my lowest weight, so now I am looking into the ROSE Procedure. The size of the stomach doesn't stay tiny over the years.
