Surgery scheduled band over RNY 4-30-09

Hello..

It's final... Surgery is scheduled for 4-30-09 for my band over RNY.

I just completed all my pre-opp stuff yesterday (EKG, Chest Xray, blood work, etc)

For some reason I just can not get as excited about this surgery as I was my original bypass back in 1993.  I'm really disappointed in myself for having gained so much weight back.

I've had some interesting chats w/ my Dr.   To sum it all up... There is no studies being conducted at this time to show if band over RNY works.  They dont know why the pouch dilates.  He said it could be the patients fault with making bad food choices or it could be just the way the anatomy of the body does.  I think it's both!

I'm really discouraged as he's saying I should be happy to lose 50lbs w/ this surgery as it's not as successful as the RNY was.. He said for that matter... no revision surgery can get the results as the original surgeries did for us.  He said we have learned the system.... How to not get sick and how to pick 'bad' foods that are easy to digest.  He said the struggle would be a lot greater this go around.  His office has done 10 revisions so far and this is the best he can tell me.

BUT.... 50lbs will make me feel better and healthier... I just hope to prove him wrong and do much better then he predicts.

I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE THAT HAS RESPONDED TO MY POST ... THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE SUPPORT... YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!

GOD BLESS,

Jeannie

Good Luck with your new surgery!  Just remember to keep on top of fills.  The people that report failure here don't seem to have keeped up or have a handle on were there at with them.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Have you looked into the duodenal switch?  Go over to the DS forum and either post a question asking about revisions, or do a search.  Many successful DSers used to have RNY's and have been revised to a duodenal switch.

You can read about the DS at www.dsfacts.com

If she just had surgery a week prior to your post, why would she want to do DS now?

Thanks Daisy and Nancy...

Daisy.. you are correct... I was part of the restore procedure and a week before I was to have surgery...I found out I was pregnant.... But having heard all the negative things about it... I think God was watching over me.   The baby is beautiful.  I gained 15 lbs w/ her... she was 5 weeks early and breech but it all worked out.  Shes doing everything a 5 month old should (eating, pooping, burping, farting, and cooing) lol

I did have the RNY in 1993 so it had to be around... the stapled the stomach.. rearranged the intestines... and all of that stuff..

I'm sorry to hear the restore procedure did not work out for you... Also that you've gone through so much because of it.  Again, my surgery is scheduled for next week so I will keep you updated.

NANCY...  As for the switch... that, along w/ the other procedures are just too risky for me...  I was told by my original RNY dr that to do those type of revisions, they have to scrape your liver off of your stomach (because it sticks like crazy glue) and I'm more at risk for leaks which is fatal in most cases.....  I think the lapband is the best decision for me as I'm not willing to chance a few of the other surgeries out there.  But thanks for the info.

Jeannie,

I hope you find this encouraging and hopefllly it will relieve so me of your stress about this. I have a friend who I thought was crazy to get a band over her RNY. Needless to say, I was proved to be VERY wrong!!! She has lost well over 150 pounds and is doing wonderful. She had her surgery about a month before mine but has lost a lot more weight then I did (I was a lightweight). If you would like to see her progress e-mail me at [email protected] and I will ask her if I can forward it to you....it is flat out incredible to have watched her journey and I think you will also do good with the band over RNY. Good luck.
