Eating past old Stapling

I have had a consult with Dr Pop at the Barix for a revision.. I had my original bypass 22 years ago.  Dr Pop did a  barium swallow to see what was remaining of my pouch.. I mentioned that I still had some restriction.. Well its all still there.
He did mention that I probably learned over the years to eat past the surgery.. He said that he could do a full revision now. where the old surgery was more of a partical.

I am nervous about making the decision as he did say that the  risks are 10x greater with a revision.  And I'm worried that I'll learn to eat past this one too.

Hi Daisy,
No, he didn't say anything, other than he showed me the xrays of what it is now, and what he would be doing. and that would be making it about 1/2 the size.
I wish I was thinking when I was there.. I have so many questions now...I had my list. But, none of them had to do with my old surgery still being there, because I would never have thought it would be.

Hi, I also had a stapling procedure 20 plus years ago, but I do not know which kind?  Was there only one?  I am looking into revision but more to address the debilitating GERD and regurgitation in my sleep which is causing  asthma and all kinds of secondary problems.  I don't even know  if the GERD is related to my procedure, but I suspect that something is going on because it is so severe.  I have gained back 80 lbs of the original 130 I lost over the years..but I am not so unhappy about it.  I feel like I have the tools  now to lose the weight through diet and exercise, and that even if I don't, I am not so morbidly obese that I am going to drop dead tomorrow..No other health issues besides the GERD..bp is fine, no diabetes..but even if a revision causes the GERD to go away as a side bonus, i'll take it.  Otherwise, I will probably end up dying too young from scar tissue on my lungs caused be frequent aspiration.
What type of surgery did you have 22 years ago? And is there a form just for old staple jobs?  I am curious to see what other way way postop people are experiencing.

My surgery was a vertical stapling,, I'm thinking thats the way they were done back then.. My surgeon, and what  I've heard from others, they put a teflon mesh around the stomach, and after the years, embeds into the stomach which makes the surgery more risky.
The surgeon that will be doing my revision is Dr Poplawski at the Barix clinic in Michigan.
and he specializes in revisions.
Because I'm Canadian, I'm in the process of trying to get Out of Country coverage for the surgery.

Do you still have restrictions?

that is exactly it.  No pouch.  I had stomach stapling.  Is there anyone left out there who had this procedure.  They don't even do it anymore because it is useless.  I want revision but want the best kind with minimal invasion and no bypass!

Do you mean you had stomach stapling? I thought the by pass came way after 22 years ago.. I had WLS may back too. but mine was stomach stapling. My staple line opened up on me. My surgery failed me.

Several surgeons I spoke to say that some Doctors and people do call the old surgery bypass but it is not one. I do not have a pouch. I have my whole stomach intact, it is just stapled off...

I'm going for a revision this coming Monday April 27Th... Follow my journey..to see if it works..I will have open surgery.. I will be in the hospital maybe a week. It  could even  be longer my surgeon said. I hope not!!! I also have a lot of repairs that need to be done.. So My surgeon is going to try his best to do the RNY for me too. Take care best wishes to you.. Alizka

1st goal to be under 200. Done!  2nd goal to be just obese. Third goal is to be under 170 by Thanksgiving 2009. I Pray I can make it. I know the Lord will help me through this.
