ok for all who are interested i finally found it. i found this website thru google and it was not easy to find. but i had to type in just the right words to get where i needed to go, so here is what i found:

Generally 800-1000 calories/day is recommended after roux-en-y. If you've had Lap-Band or Gastric Sleeve weight loss surgery, you can eat a little more and sticking with a 1200 calorie diet should help jump start your weight loss.

well that was a long search. so now we have it

That info is NOT correct because there IS no general amount you need--- it's very specific---based on your body type, metabolic needs, exercise, etc. Under-eating can stall out your metabolism as well.

Best thing you can do is have metabolic testing to find out how much YOU need in a day. In my case, if I never get out of bed, I need a minimum (allegedly) of 1680 calories to maintain my weight-- less to lose. If I do exercise, it goes up from there.

I am 18 months out, am active but do not do heavy exercise, and eat 1300 calories a day and have lost 6 pounds since Christmas.

What weight do you want to maintain?  Muliply that by 10 and you have a good idea of how many calories per day you can eat.  To maintain 120 pounds, you can have 1200 calories a day.  Your exercise can allow you to eat more calories without gaining.  This is just an estimate, but works.

I have found that to be generally true-- but there are some metabolic freaks out there-- best to have your own metabolic testing if you can swing it-- then you know for sure.

I would vouch for this statement.  I can gain weight at 1000 calories, and lose weight at 1700 calories.  Everyone's metabolism is different, and what TYPE of calories you eat also makes a difference.

Aloha....and thanks for the info. EXCEPT I don't think it's correct. My nutritionist says that eating that little will cause your body to hold on to every calorie and you need to eat more to lose! I know...it's counter intuitive, but she's right because it worked for me when I added calories.

Someone said use the weight you want to be and multipy by 10...that's a good indication of how much you can eat to maintain that weight or lose to that weight.

Good luck to you,

I agree with that statement.  I have been told by my endocrinologist and my psychologist (from the medical center) that what is not understood is that the body is a conservation mechanism and is not the efficient machine we rationalize it to be. If you cut calories, it compensates. If you exercise regularly and in a regular fashion it compensates (though consistent exercise is great for other non-weight related issues).  So you have to find a sweet spot for eating (which I have not been able to find) and you have to vary activity throughout the day for exercise.  Both allow the body to avoid locking itself down.

What a great thread. I've been struggling to find my sweet spot. I saw a nutritionist for several months and she had me eating 1000-1200, but that wasn't considering the amt. of exercising I was doing. I've been stalled and I still struggle to avoid a low net calorie intake. On one hand even when the scale is moving at a snails pace, I have notice a change in my figure and I've gone down in clothing size...but I still want the scale to move. According to the information you guys gave, I really need to be eating about 300-400 calories more a day. UGH!!!
