Just wondering?? Anyone regain all after DS?
So I'm just wondering, if anyone has regained all or near all of your excess weight after (whatever period of time) your DS?
I'm 9 years out of RNY, and I know that with my bad eating habits, that I failed the surgery, not the other way around. I started gaining after 3 1/2 yrs.
I promised myself, and the man upstairs that if I was allowed to have a revsion, and survive it, that I would LEARN to do the things I need to do to have a healthy life.
So, how about it??? Regain after DS?

I'm in the very same boat you're in. I had gastric bypass 7 years ago - lost over 200 pounds but have since, gained most all of it back. I've beaten myself up over hundreds of times, and of course felt that it was all my fault. I have since started talking with Dr. John Husted also. He is wonderful!
I am seeking to have a revision done also, and found Dr. Husted AGAIN when I started researching. I say again because when I first started checking into weight loss surgery 7 years ago, I actually had an appointment with Dr. Husted in Nashville at the time. I felt that the DS surgery was my best option. However, after finding out that insurance would cover in-state surgeons better than those out of state, I decided to go with one in Birmingham - a good surgeon - but not one who puts the needs of the patient first and determined what was best for them.
Dr. Husted has told me that RNY can fail you because of metabolic reasons. If you haven't went to his website and checked out all the information on revisions and failed surgeries, please do so.
Now, my biggest problem is insurance - they have denied me twice and don't want to approve a revision surgery. I'm still fighting though and just hoping and praying that it will come through. If you'd like to talk sometime, please let me know and we can exchange email addresses.
Good luck!

I am on the fence about a revision. I want one but am so scared to go back under the knife. I've had roughly a 50 lb gain and I am wondering now if it is metabolic due to the fact I can gain weight so easily.
Dr. Husted is the only surgeon I'd trust to do my revision and lucky for me he is now in KY.
Good luck to everyone and I am interested to hear the replies on this topic as well.

Katrina,
I think it could definitely be your metabolism causing the weight gain. After reading up on failed RNY's, I've discovered that this plays a big part in weight gain afterwards.
I know what you mean about being scared to go under the knife again - it scares me too death, but I'm more scared about losing my independence, my business and just being able to walk if I don't do something.
I see you are in KY - that would be great for you since Dr. Husted is there also. I wish you much luck and never give up.

I think if your are determined to get down to a certain size or weight, this is the best choice to give you that chance. I also think some people may get to a "good enough" place, where they are OK with their weight, but don't want to work too hard at it.
I haven't heard any DSer's complaining of gaining lots of weight, despite great effort on their part to lose or even maintain, as I've heard from from RNY or banders. Doesn't mean they can't exist, I've just never heard of them.
I just relied heavily on what studies had been done, and the data from those, and hoped I fall into the more favorable range, but knew the odds are far better with the DS than anything else. The condensed numbers below are off of Hayleys list. Sorry I don't have anything more concrete.
RNY – expected weight loss
- 50-65% expected excess weight loss (percentage varies in opinion – this is the most commonly seen estimate)
- Results may vary
- Regain
- Possible regain: more prevalent after 5 years
- 50-100% regain of weight has been recorded
- Results may vary
- Must follow “pouch rules" in an attempt to not regain

DS – expected weight loss
- 85% expected excess weight loss

- Highest success rate over 10 year study (78% avg. Excess Weight Loss – EWL)
I love my DS. Good Luck to you!
