Anyone else have a slow start....

I had a Roux-en-Y done 10 days ago.  I have only lost 5 pounds, and all of that was before I came home two days after the surgery.  I have not lost a pount in 8 days now.  I am following the rules.  I am walking about a mile a day.  I just read about everyone else having such great resuts and I get paranoid.  Anyone else have a slow start?

Hey Jenell, I did not have the same WLS as you but my beginning was slow. I think that you should just hang in there, I know that the weight loss will happen, just keep following the rules...

I feel like I am losing too slow as well.  I am at 6 weeks and I have lost only about 25.  I have not lost for about 9 days.  I hate hearing about everyone continuing to lose and me being at a plateau..already.  I knew that would happen just not this soon.

One of the best things I've done on this journey is to only weigh on Mondays.  I was so worried about this working (like you) that it was if I was ready to fail before I even really started.
STOP WEIGHING!!!  If you are following the rules, it will work off and you'll go down.
I consider myself a slow loser, but I am heading in the right direction and know it will continue.  I'm lots less stressed when I just get on once/week.  Hope this helps.
Hang in there!!!

I had surgery on the 4th of November and can really relate to all of you, I have only lost 23lbs and am paranoid also but I feel allot better than before and I have lost allot of inches!
My PCP said my slow weight loss was due to not getting enough protein in, but as little as I can eat it is hard to get 70g daily.
Heads up gang slowly but surely we will get their!!!
Roux-en-Y also.

Hi Janell,
I'm new to this, but I had my roux-en-y almost 3+ weeks ago also!  Tonight I was crying and someone told me to read this post.  I have lost 11lbs, with 8 of those lbs during the lst week.  I weigh only once a week, but have lost nothing this week. I really realized how much food has governed my life.  When I was crying I was making a pound cake for my Mom. I usually eat about a bowl of dough but decided not to.  But, I think we have to hang in there. I was even worried that maybe they didn't do my surgery right until I read your post.  Everyones body is different and we can't compare outselves to people who have lost 20lbs in a week.  Hang in there. I am.  Happy New Year, and Happy Kwanzaa.

Thanks to everyone that replied.  My weight loss seems to be much better as of late.  Here are some changes I have made to help:

1.  I read Susan Maria Leach's book, Before & After, and am doing many of the recipes she mentions there.

2.  I have stopped eating the blended protein shakes with bananas and peanut butter.

3.  I am having a small Unjury Chocolate protein shake in the morning, something for lunch (my favorite is Susan's ricotta bowl that has 1/4 c of ricotta cheese, a few spoonfuls of Classico spaghetti sauce as it's lowest in sugar content, and a little shredded mozzarella with salt and pepper warmed in the microwave.  Tastes just like the cheese from lassagna.)  and something for dinner, like Susan's black bean soup, or lentil soup, or her mediterrenean tuna salad, or her shrimp salad spread.  I have added at least one 40 grm protein isopure carb free drink to my day.

4.  I am making sure to get between 70-100 grams of protein a day and am drinking as much water as I can.

5.  I am continuing on with my walking on the treamill also.

I am now losing about a pound a day.  I think my slow start was due to lack of activity, my metabolism being slow from the 2 weeks of liquid diet before the surgery, and the bananas and peanut butter in those darn protein shakes.  I am also using the computer program from Fitday.com for $29.95 that helps me to track what I am eating / doing throughout the day.

I hope this helps someone else.

Seriously hang in there. I also had a slow start and I just kept at it. Imagine the fluids they pump in you during surgery and your hospital stay and then imagine your body healing. It's quite ticked off! I have an odd losing pattern. I go 10 days or so not losing anything and then wham! it comes off. I had surgery 11/22/08. I have friends whom have had RNY and they dropped 100 pounds in 4 months - but I realized, I am not them. The weight will come off.

See a nutritionist, talk to your doc, keeping following the rules, exercise when you can and add some weight training. I didn't have any major breakthroughs with my weight loss until I added weight training.

We are all different. Weight didn't fall off of me when I starved myself into weakness or with any other diets I put myself on. I cannot expect it to fall off of me now. This is hard work! Give yourself time, relax a little, and it will all work out.

Best of luck :)

I lost 19.5 pounds my first week after surgery, 6 the next and then 2 this past week; I am concerned because the pounds coming off are less and less. I don't know the average weight that others have lost per week but I feel like I'm the only one not losing a lot of weight. Then I read these posts and I realize that I'm not alone. To be honest I'm scared, the whole world knows I had this surgery and the anxiety of being known as the girl that didn't lose weight even after surgery is really disheartening... I've incorporated exercise into my life and I've never eaten as little food as I do now; it just seems like the weight should be falling off. I know that what I'm doing is right, I just want to stay encouraged long enough to reap the benefits and I encourage you to do the same. GOOD LUCK TO YOU
