Which surgery fails most often?

Hi everyone, I am researching the Duodenal Switch and RNY and was wondering which surgery fails the most? What are your thoughts on these procedures? Thanks, Dedee

I suppose it depends upon your definition of failure.  From my perspective as a pre op, failed VBG, hoping to get a DS, I chose it because all the data, anecdotal and scientific, that I saw, showed the odds of regain being considerably less for the DS.  You don't hear alot of stories of regain with DS people and you do occasionally hear about people revising to DS (as I hope to).  The trade-off is that the DS is more radical surgery in terms of the potential side effects of non-compliance with protein and supplement requirements being much more dire.  More risk, more reward, I suppose.  I hope this one perspective helps.

My perspective of failure is health problems that arise from having WLS and failure to lose or maintain weigh loss. I am finding out that the DS  patients seem to have less problems than the RNY patients. I also see so many getting revisions from RNY to the DS.  I would consider any needed revision as a failure of some sort. I don't want to have to have a revision down the road. I want to base my WLS choice on that and some other things. Thanks for your perspective on this topic

I am 4 years out from RNY..I lost 130 pounds and have maintained for 3 years. I do not believe that the surgery fails..I believe we fail as human beings. Surgery will not fix your head, and sometimes that is the cause of our obesity in the first place. I think there is room for all of us and we as individuals have to choose our WLS surgery based on what we feel is best for us.  I have learned how to feed my body to live instead of living to eat. I give my body what it needs..protein, healthy carbs, vitamins and supplements daily. Yes, I eat smaller amounts..but that's ok..smaller amounts satisfy me.  Base your choice on what you and your physician feels is best for you.  Iris

I respectfully beg to differ.  In many cases, there is failure of the surgery itself.  I, myself, had mechanical failure of my RNY in 96.  Staple line disruption and stoma enlargement. If you read on the revision board, you'll see many posts from people looking into or have had StomafX.

Do You know what caused your staple line disruption? Or caused the stoma enlargement?  Just curious. I do have a friend who has been succesful with RNY and an enlarged stoma.

No, I don't know what "caused" it, however, I do know the exact moment my staple line broke loose, the pain was terrible and all I'd had that morning was coffee.  So much for your theory that I must have caused it.

Show me where I said it was your fault your surgery failed. I stated my opinion and asked a simple question. Since it has been weeks since I asked I figured you either didn't feel comfortable answering or didn't want to answer. I did say I believe we as humans being fail. Show me one perfect human..that is not to say that complications do not happen. They do. As far as lap band I have heard of many failures with this procedure. Our bodies generally don't like foreign objects placed in them . It was never a consideration for me personally.

a staple line is a foreign object

DUH... But since I don't have a staple line..no foreign objects. And why respond now..so many months after this discussion has been dead and forgotten? I have many friends with a band and I am happy for them..it is working for them. Just as my RNY 4 years ago is working for me and the VSG and DS work for others. If you reread..it was a personal choice for me. PS...my silicone breast implants are foreign objects too.
