I truly believe (crying) that my RNY surgery is a failure...  I had my surgery on 6/20 and I have now l only  lost  5 lbs ( I was up to 8lbs off but gained 3 back in the last 2 days!)  and I don't get the "full feeling", I just was able to eat 1 scrambled egg w/ a slice of melted american & organic sausage for breakfast. I am on soft-foods and semi pureed.  I really think somthing went wrong w/ my surgery. Others who have the same surgeon as I or have had the surgery the same time as I have lost a lot more weight then my self ( btwn 11-20 lbs already!) I am scared, I just say my surgeon on wednesday and he put me on soft foods and semi pureed.  He has told me pre-surgery he was bypassing 200 cm's. That is distal from what I've read.. I don't dump, I did however have a big scare (really scary) yesterda with  something getting stuck but all was well within a few hours.. I only had a strawberry protein smoothie yesterday & 20 tiny bay scallops eaten very, slowly, chewing until very soupy each one. So, now what do I do??  I am going for a walk shortly. I also, don't understand this whole weight loss surgery thing to begin with... If I had the surgery ( ? from my husband) why do I diet? I almost think this surgery was a mistake because my results are showing it.. I lost 21 lbs pre-surgery on my own which took 8 weeks.  So, now I had the surgery and I can't lsoe weight now? what gives??  I almost think I should've went back on weigh****chers I wouldn't ahve had the pain, nor loss of time at work, and my body wouldn't have six surgery lap scars (one of my incisions is from gallbladder removal)...  Thanks for listening -rae

Give it a little more time.  Everyone's body is different.  I actually gained  after surgery.  I was so full of fluid from all the IV's.  I didn't realize this at the time so I really paniced.  You diet after surgery because you have a small pouch and if you ate normally you would huuuurrrrrrtt.  Once you are healed and go through the stages gradually you will be able to eat "normal" foods.  Your pouch is a tool not a magic pill.  You will eat less because you can't eat more.  It sounds like you were not well informed before your surgery.  Did you not have to see a nutritionist and a psychologist before surgery.  They and your doctor should have prepared you for this phase. I don't know how old you are and it doesn't matter.  There is a forum on this site called over fifty.  There are a lot of caring knowledgable ladies on that site.  I recommend your go there with any questions your have.  You will find answers and support.

Honey, it is very typical not to feel any sensations in your pouch at all for up to 3 months post-op ... This is b/c nerves were cut and are healing.  I didn't feel any sense of hunger or fullness for 2 months, which is why I measured EVERYTHING I ate!!!   As for only losing 5 lbs in 2 weeks, this too is normal.  Your body is in shock.  Also, you gained tons of weight from the IV fluids and gas they pumped into your body during wls.  Please give this some time ... The weight didn't come on overnight, and it ain't gonna come off overnight either.   Annette

When you are early out, you can't tel when you get full easily, so you might eat too much. Slow down and measure what you're eating. Also, you will lose weight no matter what you do this first year. Just relax, eat small portions, drink your water, and walk a lot. In 2 months you will be supprised how much you have lot. Good luck!

Hi Rae,
Please take it easy. What you are experiencing is very common. For some people it takes 6 months for their cut nerves to heal so they cannot feel fullness until then. That is why it is important to measure your food to prevent overeating.

I thought my surgery didn't work at first because I was never limited to drinking 1-2 oz per hour. Nor was I ever limited to eating a few spoons of food. The 2nd day after surgery, I ate all the food they gave me, even though I was told not to do that. I ate soup, protein drink, apple juice (and jello, I think) in probably an hour.  I was told to take 1 oz. per hour.
However, it was all liquids, and that's why I could do that.

Plus Soft and mushy foods go through your pouch faster than solid foods.
The only thing solid you ate in the meal you mentioned was a sausage. I could eat 2 scrambled eggs early out. Cheese is a soft food that goes through easily. So if you eat slowly enough, you can pack in more food than what takes up
the size of your pouch, especially if it's soft or mushy food.

In my first 2 months, I was shocked that I could eat a cup of chili. Yet when I eat meat, I have to force myself to eat a
few vegetables afterwards because I feel satisfied and don't really want anymore.

The type of foods you eat determines how much you can eat. A smoothie and
any liquids goes through you like water down a drain.

I hope that helps. It is waaaay too early to know how your surgery is working.

Take care,

Donna
