I have a hole in my pouch

I have lost and regained the same 20lbs over the last 7 months. I had my surgery Oct. of 2005. I went back to mt original surgeon a couple of months ago complaining on stomouch pain and constantly throwing up. He said he felt sure my problem was in my head, not in my stomach. Before I left his office in tears, he looked at me and asked how many milk shakes have I been drinking per day. Prior to my visit to the old surgeon, I haad to have my thyroid removed because of cancer. This seemed to be the time I stopped losing weight. Back to my stomach pain....my family Dr. referred me to a local Dr. He found the entire pouch area was one huge ulcer. He treated that for a couple of months, and looked back on there. He discoverd a small hole in my pouch leading into my old stomach. It was hidden before by the ulcer. Was sent to a local surgeon who says he thinks the hole has been there the entire time, and the acids from my old stomach burned into the hole and caused the ulcer. He is currently trying to figure out the best way for the repair. Any one else out ther with this problem?

I'm sorry your old surgeron needs to be smacked around for hte way he trated you.  That was totally unnesecarry and hurtful.  I am glad to see that you have a found a surgeon that is working with you to fix the mistake of the other surgeon.  Have you called him back and told him what the other surgeon has found?  I think your old surgeon needs to learn a little bit more compassion.   I wish you all the best of luck and a successful rest of your WL journey.  Jamice

"Because we do not know when we will die we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well and yet everything happens only a certain number of times and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your life that you can't even conceive of your life without it. Perhaps four or five times more? Perhaps not even that. How many times will you watch the full moon rise, perhaps twenty, and yet it all seems so limitless."

Ulcers are a common problem with the RNY.  Please consider a revision to the DS before having your RNY repaired.

BTW, I have no bowel problems with a 100cc.  And I'm a revision from RNY to DS.  Of course, this is the most complex surgery of them all (revision from RNY to DS, not just the DS it'self, so it is of utmost importance to find a GREAT revison surgeon.  The very best in the world and not just my opinion, is Dr. Husted.  http://www.lapsf.com/index.php)

From the OH DS pages:

Advantages:

  • More normal stomach allows for better eating quality, drink with meals
  • No dumping syndrome because the pylorus is preserved
  • Minimizes ulcer risk
  • Very effective for high BMI patients (BMI>55 kg/m2), but can be done on lower BMI just as effectively
  • The intestinal bypass is partially reversible for those having malabsorptive complications
  • Laparoscopic approach is offered by some surgeons

Disadvantages:

  • Chance of chronic diarrhea, possibly more foul smelling stools and gas.  This can be due to dieting intake, but for the most part can be controlled.
  • Malabsorption can lead to anemia, protein deficiency and metabolic bone disease in up to 5 percent of patients
  • Carbohydrates can be well absorbed and if eaten in significant quantities lead to inadequate weight loss
  • This procedure is the most complex surgical weight loss procedure.  As with any of the surgeries listed complications can occur in high risk patients. (heart failure, sleep apnea)

That original surgeon sounds like a jerk.  Go back and tell him he missed the problem (he should have not just assumed it was in your head!!!) and tell him he'll be hearing from your lawyer (SUE!!) see how much of a smart ass he is then!! Disgusting behaviour and hats off to you for pursuing it!! Karen
