Weight Gain!!!
I had my WLS May of 2003, and was very successful, I lost a total of 170 pounds and felt very proud of my self. As a matter of fact I was the poster child for my group, I encourgaged people to push them selves to do better, to keep up the good work and to get up and move. But something happen to me in spring of 2005, I went into the hospital for a thyroid cancer treatment as my cancer had been in remission but had resurfaced, and I went in to do a radio active iodine treatment, soon after the treatment my doctor started fooling around with the amount of thyroid medication that I was taking and I begen to gain weight back and to my surprise my Doctor stated that it was all in my head, so I changed doctors but the nightmare was in motion and I have now gained back 51 pounds and its driving me crazy, but I have kept blaming my medication, and then the other day it dawned on me that just maybe, just as or taste buds change after surgery, that maybe my system has changed that I went from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid for which would help me to explain the weight gain, but I'm in need of some way of reversing the reaction, I gain weight at a drop of a hat, at some points I have even stopped taking my thyroid meds. But that does not help as then I have a hormone gain, which is happening right now. I could really use some help, my surgeon has not been availble to talk to so I thought I would bring it you all and see if maybe anyone that is far enough out could shed some light, and maybe is aware of a supplement that could be taken so I could revese the course.
This sounds like your levels are whacked out to me. I would definitely see an endocrinologist and do my own research online. My weight gain was due to a REALLY screwed up thyroid, and even now, if I don't take my synthroid for even 2 days, I notice the symptoms (fatigue, hair loss, etc) I wouldn't stop taking them for anything in the world, as pre-op, if I stopped taking them, I gained no matter what I did or didn't do/eat. Get your levels checked by a good endocrinologist, and when those are definitely in check -- then start working your tool again. While you *could* have a mechanical failure going on -- rule out the easy stuff (blood levels) first! Good luck to you!
