RNY on 07/26/06 with
Hello to all. I ran across this board and thought I might post. I had the RNY on July 26 of this year. Yes I went across the boarder. I have managed to gain back 15 pounds. I am following the diet to the t. My mom had her surgery in Feb and has done real good. I was 265 and now I am back up to 280. I was 295 the day I had surgery. I had only lost a few pounds on the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. I thought this was suppose to be the re-birth everyone talks about. I feel like I am doing something wrong or that I am a failure. I know that my kidney's are starting to act up. I went to the doctor and said I had a UTI. Gave me antibiotics that I could not take. I really think I am trying to pass kidney stones. I do not feel like I am retaining water. I usually swell in my legs and fingers. I have started to exercise as well. Does anyone have any advice or words of wisdom. I look at other peoples profiles and just feel like I am a total failure. I know this surgery is not a miracle or it does not promise that you will lose all your weight. But my calorie intake is less than 300 calories a day as compared to 3 or 4 thousand a day. I do not understand. If I would of known my body was going to do this to me then I would of never had the surgery. Please do not get this wrong I do not regret having this surgery done. I just wish I could see some sign of hope. I am so depressed and feel hopeless. I know I am not the only one that feels this way. I just feel like crying. Thank you for reading if you got this far. Tanya

Sounds to me as if you are straving your body and it may well be in shut down mode. Please post this on the main board and you will get more responses on what to do.

you should go to the Doctor right away. Its not possible not to be looseing wieght unless you are drinking Milkshakes or other high sugar protien drinks. If yo did not go to the bathroom that much maybe you have a bockage in your intestine. Are you going to a doctor that is really familiar with RNY because my primary has no idea.. Put yourself in the care of a sergon that does the RNY to be safe. GOOD Luck Ging

First off, you are not a failure.....If somehow the surgery was incorrectly performed that is the surgeon's failure.... It is pretty unusual to gain weight back after surgery, but during my first ten days I held on to so much fluid that I failed to lose any weight... You said your 'kidneys are acting up"... If you have a chronic kidney condition, you could be holding fluids and not be aware of it, because you have lost weight, but if the fat you are losing is being replaced by water in kidneys that are not properly functioning, it feels like you are not "holding water". My after care program uses scales which can tell what your body composition is, meaning it can tell how much of you is fa****er and lean muscle mass...Many gyms and dietitians have these kind of scales....You may want to try to be weighed on one. They are made by a company called Tanica You should consider seeing a nephrologist to rule out any serious kidney disorders. This is very important, because weightloss, especially rapid weightloss is hard on the kidneys, especially since RNY patients should be on high protein diets.... High protein diets are very hard on people with kidney disoreders, and even stress out the kidneys of people who have normally functioning kidneys. Please don't feel like a failure, and please get some medical attention.....AS Soon As Possible.... One other poster mentioned that her PCP knows nothing about RNY and I have experienced this myself.....My doctor, who is a great man, seems to be learning about RNY in response to my needs, but he isn't particularly knowlegable about the procedure and its after effects. I can't stress enough how important aftercare is with this procedure....Get on the phone to your surgeon too.....You really need some professional guidance. I hope you are feeling better soon, Kelly

At less than 300 calories per day, you are STARVING your body! You need to up your calories to at least 1200 to help start reverse this. Your body is hanging onto the weight like a life preserver! You could end up in the hospital at this rate. Talk to your original surgeon or find a surgeon here in the states to help you out here. Get thee to a doctor!

I also had / have Chronic UTI's from the high protein and not getting enough fluids. I stopped losing weight for a month as well from not eating enough... I was told my body went into "starvation" conserving my body fat to live on... So I increased my protein, and crystal light.... Don't eat any sweets and very little carbs and started losing again.... I had to take the antibiotics at night for my UTI because they made me sick........ But your NOT alone

Hi Tanya The first thing you have to do is go back to the protien part of wls.Drink at least 2 protien shakes a day and the water is so impotant, you have to get in at least 64 ozs a day.It is not easy but if you want get back on track you gonna have to get back to basics.I had wls on Dec 1 2003,my starting weight was 565 lbs(my highest was 598 lbs)Today i weigh about 230 and I have been up and down and this far out it is up to us to keep the weight off.Exersize is also very important, even if your hurting or just not in the mood to exersize get in the mood. You can turn this around Tanya and I know it is hard but we put our bodies and our lives at risk to become a healthier person.I am praying for you. Please keep up to date on your pregress...........................steve
