Yes. Anything in oil is not absorbed so it has to be dry or bioavailable liquid.
Hi Everyone,
Been a while since I posted but I just passed year 15 since my DS and I am still going strong.
I've followed VitaLady's DS regimen since surgery and my labs have alway been great with a few small adjustments needed here and there.
My weight has settled at about 205 lbs and that's perfect for me.
The only downside of the vitamin regimen is the 28 pills per day. My wife and I travel quite a bit and I look like a drug dealer with ziplock bags full of pills in my luggage for a 3 month trip. We're currently living in Ecuador and it's not too difficult to get my vits from Amazon. We just order 6 months worth and ship to a friend and pickup when we visit the states. No hassle as I have a doctor's note explaining the huge quantity of pills and we've never even been questioned.
We'd like to spend some time in Europe (6 months to a year) but it seems very difficult to find dry A (50K units), dry E etc. as most of the shops in Europe carry vits in oil, not dry an trying to find A in 50K unit pills is impossible.
If anyone is living abroad and has any insights, please sing out.
Thanks and hope everyone is doing well!

The DS carries substantial long term risk for malnutrition. It has serious and potentially dangerous implications and complications. Many surgeons don't want to do them for those reasons, and in my view, the hesitation is justified. The DS is not for everyone - it means a lifetime of commitment, attention, and vigilance. And expense. And surgeons cannot possibly take on a lifetime of aftercare for every surgical patient, and knowledgeable post-DS care is extremely difficult if not impossible to find.
As much as I hate to admit it, NewYork***** is more right than wrong.
The surgery is much more difficult and much more specialized than most other WLS. The hospital bill for my surgery was $127,00.00 at Abington Memorial. Cigna paid just shy of $10K of that. That's gotta be a money loser for someone.
The DS is a lifetime commitment of attention and vigilance. You have to keep on top of your vitamins and protein as well as blood work and understand what all the numbers mean. Forever. And ever.
I don't depend on anyone but me (and advice and insight from the helpful members of this OH forum) to make sure I stay healthy.
That said, I should have done this 10 years before I did.
As many other have said here over time, The folks at Abington Bariatric are great. Dr. Antanavicious was a great surgeon and the hospital care was great. I would highly recommend the practice to anyone thinking about the DS.
The office staff for aftercare is another case entirely. I grew tired of getting bad advice on vitamins and protein. The office staff treats DSer like RNY folks and we don't get the level of care we should post-op. I also got tired of driving 2 hours from southern PA to Philly, arriving 15 minutes early for an 11AM appointment and waiting 2 hours for 5 minutes with Donna. The surgeons are great but the office staff could stand a bit of love.
I am seeing my PCP for my blood work now and with the help of the fine folks here I am doing very well.

Looks like the wife and I will be traveling to Scotland for a couple of weeks this fall.
I am almost 2 years out and have been following Vitalady's regimen and having great success.
Question is....how do I pack the vitamins for international travel? I travel for business regularly and just vacuum seal my vitamins in their individual 4 compartment daily boxes.
Will this work for international travel? Will I need to pack them in the individual bottles and then distribute into the daily containers once I get to Scotland?
If anyone has traveled internationally and can give some input I'd appreciate it!
Thanks!
These days if it's 60 degrees out I am freezing. It's a nice change actually.
The nights in PA are now getting down into the mid 40's and we just put the electic blanket on the bed. I cranked that sucker up to 7 last night and was in heaven.
My wife, on the other hand, is the human flame beacuse of her age. We are actually talking about getting a twin size electric blanket so I can just use it on my side of the king size bed. I can be warm and she can be cool.

This morning:
2 eggs over medium
I slice wheat toast
4.5 oz ham steak
Coffee with 1/2 & 1/2 and Splenda
Lunch:
4oz hamburger
1 slice cheese
.5 oz sliced deli ham
Wheat bun
Jalapeno on the burger
Crystal Light
For dinner (planned):
7oz Filet Mignon
Spinach
Crystal Light
Snacks:
Sugar Free Popsicles
Beef jerky
I just wanted a baseline.
I would ask your doctor for a copy of the report.
When I asked about the T score I was told they don't do T scores for 47 year old males.
I'd nonetheless absolutely add B12 and folic acid.
I am on the Vitalady regimin...whatever Vitalady sells for B Complex is what I'm taking.
It's good to see you around here again.
Gina
I've beenaround...just nothing to post about :)
Definitely WAY increase the D, add B12 and folic acid, perhaps a B complex too.
Your protein isn't great. How much are you eating?
My protein is usually 110 and above. Usually closer to 130 or 140.
Z Score results:
AP Spine (L1 - L4) 3.7
Femoral Neck (Left) 2.3
Total Hip (Left) 2.8
It says:
1) "The patient's overall BMD Assessment is within expected range for age" (47 Male).
2) "The value of BMD to predict fracture risk in this age group is not clearly determined".
3) "Specific guidelines for monitoring BMD in men under age 50".
Doc tells me am fine.
I was expecting a T score number and have no real idea how to read a Z score. Anyone have a clue?

So my Ferritin dropped down to 1/2 of what it was after the NUT told me to eliminate the C when I take the Iron. That explaines the slight anemia. Vitamin C went back in today.
I've doubled my D from 50K/day to 100K/day to try and increase it a bit.
I've also upped the B12 a bit to get it up a bit as well.
Anyone see anyting else that needs a bit of work??
Not bad for a 47 year old male 6 months out.
Thanks in advance!
She's constantly reminding me what an a$$hole I am :)
Other than that it was a great 30 minute nap.
Those Hep shots sting like a mofo.
I've tripled my D to 15K.
If I can swing it I'd love to stop by and meet everyone!
I'll know more when it gets closer to the weekend.
