Has anyone had very high PTH and been able to get it back down to normal range?

Hi all! I recently have been struggling with my PTH. IT jumped up 40+ points in a matter of 4 months. We are trying to figure out why. If any of you have had high PTH and have been able to get it down how did you go about doing so? Feeling very concerned as my PTH is 147 or so right now. I have increased my D to 200k iu, Calcium to 300 mg and separated my mag from my calcium. Just really concerned and am wondering what others have done to manage high PTH.

For those of you that had high PTH did you develop osteoporosis?

Thank you for your input.

1 calcium dose is 600mg, I was taking 6/day. Vitalady helped me several years ago. My PCP has a problem because my D hovers between 80-130.

I'm pretty happy with that. When your D is up and you have plenty of calcium your PTH will go down.

I'm doing 4 doses of calcium now. Make sure it citrate and not carbonate.

I had to increase my D to 100/day to have a good D level, but that didn't bring my PTH down. I kept increasing my calcium citrate, now up to 500 mg 5 times/day, and my high PTH came down with that dose. I don't know what dose it will take for you, but 300 mg/day is very low for someone with the DS.

Make sure to separate your doses of calcium citrate by at least 2 hours, and some say it is better absorbed with food than without food. I just make sure to take it 5 times/day and that has worked well for me.

Hi there. Thank you for your reply.

That was a typo. I am taking 3000 mg of calcium per day now and I am separating it out by 2 hours and also separating my magnesium from my calcium. Is there a brand of mag citrate that you like? Some folks. Have mentioned UPcal powder as I believe its more quickly absorbed.

Make sure it's calcium citrate, and check the dose in each pill. Most calcium citrate pills are only 250 mg each because it's a large molecule (and those pills are huge even at 250 mg) so a dose of 500 mg requires two pills.

I've never needed to supplement magnesium so I can't answer your question. For some reason my mg level hovers at the high end of normal with no mg other than what's in my multi.

An increase in D. Also, I have had great results with Slow Release calcium. It's counterintuitive because it's mostly carbonate, but I and one other DSer have tried it and it has worked well for us.

Hmm..interesting regarding the slow release calcium. I will have to check that out. Is that the name of it-slow release? I have increased my D to 200,000 iu daily.

What is the brand of the slow release calcium?

Low vitamin K will also inhibit calcium absorption. Most docs don't bother testing for K, either.
