Diabetes type 2 and DS Pre Surgery Diet

I have type 2 diabetes and am scheduled for surgery on October 20. Just got the pre op diet information. In addition to taking pills for the diabetes my doctor put me on insulin 3 months ago. My surgeon wants me to have 2 meals replaced by protein shakes and one high protein meal like meat etc. How do I keep from bottoming out sugar wise by doing this? I see my pcp next week but am curious what others are doing or how you are handling this.

A high-protein diet should help level out your sugar spikes.  You may need to add another shake if need be, or keep a protein snack nearby, like cheese.  One cool thing to know is that most type 2 diabetics are off their meds very soon after surgery...many before they even leave the hospital.

I would touch base over the phone with the Doc who put you on insulin.  Mine allowed me to make some adjustments to the dosage based on my daily readings.

It may do just what Valerie said and normalize your readings but depending on your regular eating going in to it it could cause the lows you are thinking about. The high protein meal may help you avoid that though. I was completely on Boost glucose control for my pre-op no solids at all.

Congrats. I hope you walk out post-op not needing your meds but even if not you'll be off them soon enough. At my high I was taking 95 units twice a day and now nothing but I still watch just in case.
