Complex Carbs?

Hi. I'm a long time lurker.  I've posted and replied to several things over the past 3 years.  This site has really helped me get through some tough times.  Especially with understanding what my body was going through and what foods to avoid.  Now that I'm at my goal weight, and have had the excess skin removed, I don't want to continue to loss weight, but I also don't want to introduce food that is going to give me bad gas and diarrhea.  I've started to introduce fruit, but it seems to be giving me gas.  I have been so strict on a below 30 carb a day diet, that anything I try above that is making me sick.  I've started to read about good carbs vs bad carbs.  Does that pertain to DSers?  I wondering if I could try amaranth or quinoa or whole wheat pastas, brown rice??  Has anyone had problems with these?  Anyone have any suggestions on what I could slowly introduce to my diet?  I know the best way to find out is to try each one at a time, but I really don't want to spend a day/night on the toilet in pain.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

The problem is, we all are so different and react different to carbs. To know for sure you do need to try it yourself.

I agree with Herman that the only solution is to try things.  You might also try stuff like gas-x and beano to relieve the gas issues. I wonder if it is just part of a "learning" process for your body - start small and build up?  I'm a little over 2 years out and have started to add fruit/vegetables back to my diet.

For me watermelon and canteloupe were no problem but cherries brought on some gas.
I've also added back broccoli and cauliflower without issues (cooked that is - raw can still give me a problem if I have too much).

I'm 7 months out and I've been eating fruits since the first month with no trouble losing weight. Grapes, strawberries, blueberries are all great.

I usually eat 100 to 150 grams daily, and no issue losing. You have little choice if you want a normal diet since everything has carbs in it.

The 2 things I avoid are bread and pasta. More than a small amount seems to retain weight and give a general feeling of malaise.

II heard a doctor on TV talking about people adding gluten back into their diet.  She thought the whole gluten free diet was bad but people would talk about how it had to be true because now when they ate bread they felt like crap.  Oversimplified she said, this is because your digestive bacteria becomes very tuned to digesting what you eat and so sudden shifts in diet will cause gastric distress because you don't have the exact bacteria needed to process it all.  The only thing you can do is to keep eating it until you develop the new gut mix you need.

I would think this would be double true for us DS'ers.  We already have a propensity towards digestive upset because of the malabsorbtion, add to that a restrictive diet and it is no wonder that a "cheating" puts us in the potty for hours.   I wonder if a probiotic would help ease this.  Charcoal pills can, but they also cause vitamin malabsorbtion, so I wouldn't make a practice of it.

I'm only at 10 months, so still deep into the honeymoon extreme diet, but I hope to be one of those veterans that can eat anything even though I know it will be some distress to widen my food choices back up at first.
