I am pre-op, but I do have a question about iron. My Ferritin was 3 a few weeks ago. I have always had problems with anemia and the doc is wanting me to get that in order before surgery.  Insurance won't pay for a infusion until I try pills for a month.  I noticed you said you were skipping iron, but taking heme iron?  I used to take the Proferrin (Vitalady used to sell it but it doesn't look like she does anymore). But I guess I'm curious if you are taking "iron" tablets and the heme iron as well.

I would recommend taking Vitalady's carbonyl Tender iron. It comes in capsules or tablets. Tablets are what I used in combo with Proferrin to bring my iron markers up. What you could do is take the recommended dose of iron (maybe 60mg) for a month in carbonyl form. It won't be enough but you will meet their requirement. Then you should go for an infusion ASAP. Supplements won't do anything for ferritin that low.

Once you get the infusion and get cleared for the DS you'll need to start supplementing again in a few months to keep the levels up.

I was taking 300mg of carbonyl in the mid afternoon and 2 Proferrin tablets at bedtime post-DS. My numbers weren't as low as yours, but several years taking that much, brought all my iron markers up to optimal levels. Now I'm foregoing the carbonyl until my ferritin comes down a little.

Keep us posted.

Thank you SO much for your help. Even the nurse gave me the "I'm sorry I hate insurance requirements" look when I said "why can't we just do the infusion now". It would explain why I'm EXHAUSTED every single day. I'm also a non-traditional college student - 49 years old and having trouble with memory etc.  I just wonder if all the trouble I have in the last 2 years with memory has to do with this. Sad that my own GP didn't notice this. The doctor's office gave me Bariatric Advantage 60mg Ferronyl® carbonyl iron (with C). At the 30 day mark (end of March) I go back for more blood work and then schedule the infusion. Strangely enough, I had my psych appointment last week and while walking through to his office, we walked through the new infusion area in our hospital. It was very nice. I will add the Proferritan tablets sometime in this mix.  I know when I used them quite a while ago, they did actually help. Although I had no help as to how much to take, so I only took one.  Thanks again!
