I'm new to posting on here, but have viewed these forums for over a year now.  I have my pre operation testing on March 4th and then I will get my surgery date.  I am so excited to finally get this done.  I tried to get bariatric surgery done in 2013 but I got layed off from my job and lost my insurance.  Now that I have a new job I made sure the first thing I did was to start the process towards this goal.

I am very excited!

any tips?

Thanks

Jason

I have no personal experience with Dr. Inman, but she has an excellent reputation as a DS surgeon. I'm glad you were able to get back on insurance to get the medical care you need and deserve.

Someone else who is one of her pre-ops recently posted here about the post-op vitamin advice he was given by her staff, and it was inadequate. See if you can find the thread, there was a lengthy discussion. I will also be sending you a pm.

Congratulations Jason! My advice would be to read as much as you can about vitamins and eating. I started walking before surgery so it became a routine. Good luck!

I had a duodenal switch by Dr Inman in late February at St Vincent Carmel.  I had some complications post-surgery which were decidedly no fun, but she is an excellent surgeon and you are in good hands.

Tips I have to pass on:

1.  Walk a ton after surgery (I'm talking 2-3 miles a day if you can, laps around the bariatric ward) and you will feel better, although it is hard at first to do anything more than a lap or two.

2.  Bring a blanket, it's cold in that ward.

3.  It is harder than you think to get all your liquids in.  I knew it would be hard, but it's HARD.  Get a variety of drinks.  Doubly so for protein, because protein drinks aren't exactly much fun to choke down.  Get a variety and find what you like before you invest into large amounts.

4.  I was much more worried about being able to swallow pills after surgery.  I thought I needed a lot of water to take them, but turns out what I thought was "a lot" is really more like 3/4 oz or 1 oz which is no biggie.  I invested an insane amount of effort into finding all chewable/liquid vitamins, only to have to take large pills for acid reflux anyway.

Thanks for the advice!  I just got my surgery date last week. It is mid April. I had to go to a cardiologist before they would sign off on my pre testing.

What complications did you have if you don't mind me asking

thanks!
