Is rice okay for newbies
I too love rice, and beans but both are still a big NO for me (5.5 months out). I even tried brown rice, thinking complex carb might make a difference, but yeah no. I can eat about a tsp of rice, yes a tsp, before my stomach starts going with gas. And although beans taste SO GOOD, they are just as bad for me as, say, a sugar cookie (which is horrid). Sorry, maybe in a few months?

I'm a red beans and rice lover, too, as well as all other Louisiana cuisine...even gator meat!
I didn't eat rice early out..but once I hit the 3 year mark, all bets were off! I did eat Cream of Rice as an early pre-op in my soft diet. IMHO it blows up just as much, if not more, than regular rice, but other than feeling super full, I had no troubles. Just go slow, stop and let it settle if you must, then continue if you can. Fluids are more important, anyway.
Natural brown rice, Basmati rice on occasion, but it goes down and stays down just fine for me. I don't eat huge helpings, just about a tablespoon, to break up the monotony of the beans, or whatever. The serving of beans is a 4 oz ramekin. Keep in mind, I'm almost 6 years out. Newbies should proceed with extra caution! BTW, stuff "getting stuck" is more of a RnY thing. DSers have more nearly natural anatomy of the stomach, although swelling when you're newly-switched can cause things to get stuck sometimes so, yes, but no.
That said, the carbs do not affect me weightwise. I need the carbs, to keep my weight stable because I am a hyper-malabsorber. Rather than have a revision, I voted Creon for life. Taking pills doesn't bother me, I had plenty of practice before my DS on that front, so adding vitamins to a Rx I can't get rid of is just fine with me. I work very hard to keep my weight stable, and I eat more frequently than I ever did when I was SMO. Very calorie-dense protein and fat combos for me. Exercise is to build muscle, and keep me heavier, since muscle weighs more than fat. My PCP also limited me to no lower than 160, due to my other issues. I have to not overdo in terms of exercise, since I have Lupus and fibromyalgia. Many people would be disqualified for that, but my weight was causing so much trouble, the benefits didn't even give the risks a vote!
Now that I'm at a weight where other medications work, prednisone is only used if I have to be in the hospital, and I haven't had a flare that bad since before I lost my first 200 pounds. Most can now be handled at home, but again, I must be careful of my activity level.
I would stay away from rice, pasta, bread, beans, milk, fruit, bars so early, you have all the time in the world to eat that stuff later and you can explode then, but give your DS time to work for you and work with your DS to maximize weight loss and not against it. I promise you one thing, you won't die if you don't eat the rice those damm cravings.

Everyone's tolerance is different. I eat red beans and rick in Wendy's chili which seems ok for me. I had surgery in early November, and I would say I can eat about a 1/3rd of a small chili. Other protein foods like chicken don't go down well, but steal is ok for me.
Try small amounts and waits 5 min. If your like me, your body will let you know pretty quickly if it's ok or not.
Good luck.
