I had my DS in 2008 and since then, my ferritin level has been increasing since then. The normal range is 6 - 170. Pre-op, I was at 55. Six plus years later, I am currently at 722. All other iron and nutritional levels are normal. I have googled around and am finding nothing.

Pre-op: 55
4 months post-op: 141
9 months post-op: 181
1 year post-op:     163
1.5 years post-op: 305
2 years post-op:    277
3 years post-op:    352
4.5 years post-op: 360
5.5 years post-op: 427
6 years post-op:    481
6.5 years post-op: 722

I'm guessing you've stopped all iron supplements now?  Mine is over 300 and my dietitian had me cut my iron supplements by half. I did that for 6 months, started back, and ferritin rose again. Now I'm only taking 1 Proferrin a day until I have labs done again in Jan.

I have been on reduced iron since January, which flattened the increase a bit. Then changed to proferrin ES in July. That's when my ferritin skyrocketed. I'm actively engaged with my doctor to get this figured out. I was just wondering if others were experiencing the same issues.

Thanks for your reply.

your results are interesting...first you were normal till 1.5 yrs PO they were relatively stable from 1.5 to 6 years PO and just at 6.5 yr PO they almost doubled?  did you change anything you know?  I would have this repeated to verify the result.  I dont think the is supplement induced.  I have see elevated ferritins in MO, inflamatory conditions, CA,  hemochromatosis and ETOH.  I will assume that you have not taken Fe for many years with these ferrin results, since you have too my Fe in your blood.   after I had my iron panel repeated and a CBC  I would request a consultation with a hem/onc....hope you find your answer soon.

Actually, my ferritin jumped from 55 to 141 at my 6 month post-op labs and pretty much continued up at the same trend until I switched to proferrin in July. Then it really jumped. I had blood work done yesterday for inflammation and a test for genetic markers for hemochromatosis (no family history that I know of). I am a non-drinker and I am at a normal weight.

The recommendations by my weight loss clinic were to continue iron supplementation to maintain my other iron related levels and no concern was shown for the increase in ferritin until I questioned the levels several times. My regular doctor is very engaged at this point.

Thanks for the reply.

So, if your normal level almost tripled, why on earth were you still supplementing iron?  I've not supplemented iron since my first year post op.  I always had strong numbers pre-op, so I think my need was replacing what I lost with surgery, but i've not needed it since.

BTW - surgeons offices and nutritionists suck when it comes to any kind of successful nutritional advice long-term.

I continued to take iron because my other iron levels were low at the doctor's recommendation. I have since stopped supplementing.

Thanks.

ETA: I also modified my iron supplementation as recommended by the folks at Vitalady.

My ferritin is also high although other iron related tests are normal.  My GP says ferritin levels can be affected by inflammation.  I have no known reason for inflammation.  I think I am going to look into this further as well.

My tests for inflammation came back normal and the genetic testing for Hemochromatosis came back with only one bad gene, so I don't have the disease, but I am a mutant gene carrier.

I've been referred to a hemotologist for further examination.

My ferritin has been trending up but I'm only 18 months out. I'm not sure if it is inflammation
or the iron. All other numbers are right around low normal. I did decide to cut back on the iron
by half to see where that gets me.
