Ketogetic Diet
I think one of the reason's I have been so successful with the DS is because I have adopted a modified form of the ketogenic diet. The diet break down is.......75 % fat, 20 % protein and 5% carbohydrates. I modified the protein percentage to 30% to accommodate DS need for 100grams of protein per day. This diet is very similar to Atkins and the DS diet. I found that completely eliminating sugar and flour is the key to manage carbohydrate cravings. I don't miss them nor do I crave them. The ketogenic diet has a fabulous way of stabilizing appetite, increasing energy and most importantly.........increased brain power, resulting in a higher cognitive function. At 59 I am able to multi-task like I did 15 years ago. Prior to changing to the ketogenic diet I had to take hypertensive medication. I was able to completely wean off it 6 weeks after starting the diet. One of the keys to the success is checking my urine daily for ketones..........and keeping my carbs to 20 -25g per day. When you use fat as a fuel many positive changes happen in our bodies metabolically. Scientist are now finding that cancer cells do not multiply when sugar is not present...........so studies are now pointing to the ketogenic diet in the treatment of cancer. If you doubt this information please google “Ketogenic diet” and see for yourself. I believe this is trail blazing information which will prove itself in time. Until I adopted this diet I use to really struggle with carbohydrate cravings, gas and explosive BM's, a strict ketogenic diet was my solution. I also want to add that I don't consider this dieting......for me its a lifestyle change.
Light and Love,
Marie
Sure...................Eggs are the ketogetic diets best friend, I have them scrambled in coconut oil (absolutely delicious by the way) with veggies and cheese for breakfast every morning. Lots of salads drenched in olive oil or avocado oil with chicken salad or albacore tuna and feta cheese with green olives. I snack on nuts, seeds, cheese and lean meets also fresh veggies. Dinner is a nice size portion of meat, fish or poultry, a side salad and steamed veggies with butter (lots of butter) and sesame seeds. Once in a while I have sugar free Jello with cool whip. I don’t eat alcohol sugars and get my fiber from fresh veggies which is in abundance. I use the 20g to 25g total carbohydrate count without the fiber ratio in order to stay in the state of ketosis,,,,,,,,trace to small on the urine sticks. If I fry foods I dip my meat in eggs then crushed pork rhines and fry it in coconut oil, absolutely yummy. The only process foods I eat is low carb Marinara sauce (Victoria's from Costco) and Lean and Fit Greek yogurt at 9 grams of carbs. At first it is a bit challenging to give up wheat, grains, sugar and fruit but after you convert to ketosis you no longer crave them and I always feel extremely satisfied with my high fat meals.
I think you mean 20-25g of carbs, not mg of carbs!

Completely eliminate sugar?
Given the processed foods that we use, whether we want to or not, how did you find a way to eliminate *all* of them?
I have used artiificial sweeteners for years, and would really like a more natural sweetener.
I've already tried stevia, and for me it has a bitter aftertaste, and monkfruit is just not sweet
enough.
I make a few exceptions and indulge with a little with Splendid…………..I also use a little Cool whip. I do know that giving up almost all processed food is very challenging but I have found the rewards are well worth it. The diet requires extensive research and careful attention to the process of ketone fuel conversion. For the first couple of weeks you will experience diarrhea as the body adjusts. After the adjustment period I ended up with one normal (also normal smelling stool) in the morning only and no more smelly gas. There is also a period called Atkins flu when you experience flu like symptoms that will be resolved by increasing salt intake. Then after about 5 weeks you will notice an unbelievable surge of energy and intellectual clarity. Also….. all and I mean all carbohydrate cravings disappear. I have never in my life felt better as I also look much younger and vibrant. Many people have noticed this and have made comments. I am never hungry either. I do know this diet is not for everybody………..but for those who experience many of the negative DS symptoms as a result of carbohydrate consumption........... this is a valuable option.
Just my personal opinion but I have always believed this was the best diet for almost anyone. I have found it is harder to achieve and stay in ketosis. After years of low carbing the best way for me to stay there is to eat only eggs... But it's too restrictive, I can't live long term on eggs alone. Darn it!
BTW those ketosticks are expensive. You can get more bang for the buck if you cut them in half lengthwise!
Thank you Patty for your positive comment and observation. The Ketogetic experts are all saying that coconut oil is the way to go in order to consistently stay in Ketosis, it by-passes a digestive step and goes straight into the blood stream. I love eggs but not that many of them. One of the reasons I use the ketone strips is keeps me on tract and lets me know if I need to increase the coconut oil or look for hidden carbs in my food intake...............thanks for the money saving tip on the sticks.
Um......so how do you test your urine. Do you have to pee in a cup every morning and then dip the stick or do you just dip in the potty. Sorry........very very uniformed on this subject. I am only 2 weeks out on the SADI (modified DS) so it will be a spell before I an eat veggie's and meat like that but it sounds like a diet that I would like. I do need to control my carb cravings and this sounds like it may do the trick. If you go to a family gathering or birthday and eat a piece of cake - does that through everything off for week...month...or can you just get right back on the next day and not have to go through the withdrawl symptoms you mentioned?
