looking for constructive advise

Please dont tell me to stop weighting myself as that is not going to happen.. I am looking for constructive advise OTHER than stop weighting myself.

I am 3.5 months out from DS. I had been eating about 900 calories with macros of 60%fat 35% protein and 5%carbs. which gave me about 60g fat 80g protein and 10g carbs. I have been loosing about .5 a day for the past month.

I was told by veterens that I was not eating enough. that I needed to increase my fat and protein. so I increased to 1000 and than 1100 and now am at 1200. Still using the same macros which is now giving me 105g protein 80g fat and 15g carbs. I got on the scale this am to see I gained a lb in 1 day.

Now I know only eating 1200 calories in a day it is impossible to gain a lb in a day. But I still feel the need to make sure that what I am doing is right. I look at those numbers and knowing that we only absorb .20 of the fat I would think lower protein and increase fat.. But my labs came back and I am low on protein already (which I guess is because I was not getting enough before and have since changed)...

Looking for advise..  Wait a few days and see if things work out?? Or do you think there is something wrong with the numbers as they are??

thanks

Cheryl, I can be obsessive about the scale myself, but if I've learned anything, it is not to panic.  I can watch my weight fluctuate as much as 5 lbs from day to day, so I have a strict "no freaking out" rule until a change has been consistent for 7 days.

It has been a long time since my surgery, but I am pretty sure I was not getting 1200 calories a day at 3.5 months.  At that stage, most of my calorie intake came from protein shakes - I ate as much as I wanted, I just couldn't eat very much, and made sure I was getting 120 grams of protein daily (it didn't leave room for much else).

sigh and the saga continues.. Got my blood work back from my 3 month test and it is not good.. Protein has dropped significantly since pre ds. vit A and vit D are bad.. other things are low border.  I can eat A LOT.. Unfortunatly not enough to get in 120 grams of protein..  Starting tomorrow I am going back to 3 shakes instead of the 1 or 2 I have been.  I thought 1200 was a lot.. sigh..   I have been doing low carb

Trust me, if you cannot get 120 grams of protein, you cannot "eat A LOT"---unless you're eating some things you don't need before you eat that much protein.

My surgeon's goal for me was to get 1500 calories a day by the time I was SIX MONTHS post-op. You're only 3.5, right?

Eat all the protein you possibly can, don't count your fat, just enjoy it, and relax.

Your weight can fluctuate by a few pounds which is exactly why you shouldn't weigh yourself each day. If you refuse to listen to the best advice (don't weigh everyday), then why even ask?

I weighed myself every day. Sometimes I lost, sometimes I gained. But that is no different from any nonDSer on any given day. A bowel movement, too much salt, diahhrea, heavy food (steak), a period, etc will all effect the scale.

If you want to weigh yourself every day, go ahead. But you have to understand that NO ONE's weight is ever constant on a daily basis. Don't get discouraged by a little uptick on the scale. If you are eating correctly, then all is well.

Push the protein, don't worry about the fat, and keep those carbs low. Make sure you are taking all your supplements (it sounds like this could be a bigger problem for you right now). Your diet and your supplements are both so important to your health. Good luck.

Could you make a spread sheet and instead of putting your emphasis on today's change, pay attention to a running 6 day average?   That way you don't have to worry that you won't see trends, but the daily weirdness won't get to you so much.

Good Luck!

I still weigh every day and note it on the calendar hanging over the scale.  I also took measurements every week, as that's where I noticed more loss rather from the scale.

I agree, add in more protein and shakes.  Plus, how much A & D are you taking?  They need to be dry, 25k for the A & 50k for the D3.  You may need to be taking 2-D3 a day for several months.  I had to start taking mine in the middle of night to get my levels to go up.  Also, you may need to up your calcium for the D3 to go up too.
