Exercise and Bad Knees

Is there anyone that just could not exercise right after their surgery and still lost weight?  My knees and feet are wore out from all of the weight I have carried around for years and I walk with a cane.  I sit all day behind a switchboard.  I know that is why I am losing so slow???  I have a ellipitical peddler under my desk and I try to use it during the day......but sometimes my knees hurt so bad I can't.  I try to get up and move around my desk.

Have you tried water aerobics?

Do a search on "Sit and be Fit" or look at https://www.youtube.com/user/SitandBeFitTVSHOW. It was on the local TV station when I lived in Florida, but there are tons of videos around or you can purchase DVDs.

Also, have you talked to your surgeon?  Living with a ds is kind of an art form, so perhaps they could spot something.

Good Luck!!

Stationary bike is another good choice for someone with bad knees, along with anything in the water. Also, maybe your pcp could refer you to a physical therapist who could recommend specific exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knees and ankles, which would help take some of the stress off the joints.

I have a recumbent bicycle.....I have to use a stool to get on and off because I can't bend my knees.   I checked into under water treadmill. ..it was $135 a month and right now that is not possible.  I haven't found a water aerobic class at night or on weekends.

If you can't find a water aerobics class at a good time, try just walking in the water on your own. It's great exercise and very easy on the joints.

And if your knees are so bad that you can't bend them, have you been evaluated to determine whether they are bad enough to need knee replacement?

One of reasons to get weight off so I can get my knees fixed

A few months before my DS, my knees got SO bad that I was practically confined to a wheelchair. My worthless PCP (then---I have a much better one now!) referred me to a joint and bone doc. who told me my only hope to deal with the pain would be two total knee replacements, but that at my weight they probably wouldn't do well. I suggested the Synvisc shots, and they got me back on my feet well enough to walk. I still couldn't shop without a handicapped cart, but at least I could get around in the house.

Three months after my DS, I was doing yard work, and carrying around big rocks! Now, almost 11 years post-op, my knees still HURT---but I'm pretty mobile, and I STILL haven't had the knee replacements. Frankly, they scare me far more than my DS ever did.

I also have bad knees and it is why I had surgery, I joined YMCA locally and did the water aerobics and water walking.  That was 8 years ago, I am due to have my knees done in the next few months.  I'm positive that my knees wouldn't have lasted that long with the additional weight.  It took me 1 year to lose the 100 pounds I needed to.
