Dumping? Pros & Cons of DS

Hello all ~ I am new to the forum and considering which surgery is best for me. Do you experience dumping syndrome with the DS surgery? I am a little confused by details I have read from different sources. I am also considering the sleeve. I know this would be a lifestyle change, but the idea of never being able to have a bite of anything sweet again is really hard to swallow! I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you!

Welcome!  I've never dumped after having sweets. I guess the closest I've come is more like the carb coma you get after a Thanksgiving meal when all you want to do is take a nap. I'm not a sugar or carb addict so I don't worry about it. If you'd like to do a little more research about the DS, a great site to read is www.dsfacts.com.

Dumping occurs in only half of the RNY patients, so many who depended on it to keep them in line are left to their own willpower, while others dump on even the healthy foods, so it's a real crap shoot.

I've never dumped either, and its extremely rare for DS or sleeve, although not impossible.

Dumping is pretty rare for a DS and some Docs will say it isn't even possible. Sometimes people will overeat early on
and call that dumping but not really the same thing at all. When you first have the DS or the VSG for that matter you
sometimes fill up your stomach before you realize that you have eaten too much.

I've had the occasional cookie and cake with no dumping issues. It usually gives me a loose stool the next day though.
Some candy last Christmas that didn't cause any kind of a problem.
The only issue early on is that you want to make the most out of your initial loss so better to stay, mostly but not completely,
away from stuff like that until you are near or at goal.

I came out of the surgery a little lactose intolerant but that seems to be getting less as time goes on. I've seen some people
discover they are now intolerant to gluten or the fake sugars in sugar free products but that hasn't been the case for me. I can
eat/drink anything I want except a glass of regular milk.

I just spent the summer eating carbs and sweets and have never experienced anything remotely close to dumping.

6 years post Ds surgery.  Started at 320 now 145.

first year had to b very careful on what and how much I ate.  Lactose intolerance caused huge gas issues.  Sweets kinda made me feel sluggish.  I had most pain with gas issues.  After 1st year,  was able to eat most anything in moderation sticking to mostly protein but still have carbs.  Gas cramps very seldom now but I stay away from dairy except on occasion.  I eat sweets whenever I want (at least once a day).  Corn meal products mess me up and I love Mexican food.
