Are there any studies relating to d/s patients and absorption of pain medicines?

Hello everyone, I am still going through tremendous pain and have several new doctors I am working with to fix the problems I am having I was just curious how well we absorb pain meds after surgery, they seem to have very little effect on me, so was just curious! Thanks- Mike

I'm a very cheap date for pain meds, so no problems here.  My hubs (not a wls patient) has a natural resistance to opiates, though, which came as a surprise when he was having his very last gallbladder attack that landed him in the hospital for emergency surgery.  They gave him all they were allowed by law and he was still in pain, still conscious and still had his vitals going strong.  They may need to try a med from a different family.

I don't know of any studies but I can tell you that I recently had 8 spinal fusions in my neck done as a single surgery. It was my first surgery since having my DS in January.

I metabolize pain meds very differently now - liquid dilaudid, oxycontin tablets and liquid oxycodone along with gabapentin and 2 muscle relaxants were barely taking the edge off the pain. I then spent most of the next 2 weeks, while I was in the hospital and rehab facility, being treated as though I was mentally ill and/or an addict. They sent a psychiatrist to speak to me about my "emotional pain" - I told them to address my excruciating physical pain!

Eventually I was given Fentanyl pain patches (combined with the above mentioned meds) which began to lessen the unbearable pain.

The hospital and rehab facility are 2 of the top medical centers in the US. I hate to think of what could have happened at lesser establishments!

The patches are very tightly controlled and my drug plan was reluctant to cover them but they are an absolute necessity for me at the moment.

Good luck to you in getting your issues resolved.

I brought up this very topic to the Mayo clinic when I was there for test last month. My doc said it had never occurred to him about absorbing full meds. He increased my meds about 25%, and it seems to have helped.

Have you tried the kinds that place under your tongue?   After surgery Mexicali Bariatric Center gave us SupraDOL.  Ketorolaco Tablets 30 mg, sublingual.  I don't remember noticing a difference from pain drugs pre-surgery.  I'm not sure those are available in the US.

Good luck!
