Yes, I'm familiar with where most vitamins and minerals are absorbed. I've been living with  a DS for some time now. (*grin*)

Not ALL of any vitamin or mineral is absorbed in just one part of the gut, and most surgeons report having fewer malabsorption problems with patients with longer common channels. This is why some have certain standard lengths they won't go shorter than. Oh, and DSers absorb iron better than, say, RNYers, since we still DO use part of our duodenum.

The only 'newer' procedure that has any long-term data is the Sleeve. The Sleeve is believed to cause some minor metabolic changes, due to the removal of most of the stomach. But there again, I believe you would benefit from the sort of permanent metabolic changes the DS, and ONLY the DS, cause. Otherwise, you're going to have to live on a very restricted diet.

The SADI-S has no long-term data, and frankly, the threat of bile reflux would rule it out for ME. I, personally, would want to wait until I was able to talk with people who've actually been living with one for no less than 5 years. I'm sure you're noticed that almost everyone is completely "in love" with their particular WLS for the first few years.

As for getting old and unable to remember where your shoes are---I've always said I want my body and my mind to wear out at the same time. If I get so forgetful I can't take care of myself, then it's time to die. (Just my personal take on things.)

Hi again, I deleted a couple of posts in this thread because frankly, I'm starting to think I do not know what the heck I'm talking about.  After talking with a few folks here on the forum I believe I really do not understand the way DS works as much as I had thought I did.  I also think that my previous statements may have mis-lead some future reader, and I did not want to be a source of any misinformation.  So that said, I'm back to square one.  And I have just a couple more weeks to figure out if I include the DS to my VSG, or not.  That's it for now.  Tim

If you only want to count protein and eat like a normal person, go for the DS.  If you want to live on a diet the rest of your life go with the VSG.  I have no regrets.  I had bowel issues before my DS and still have them.  Would I change anything if I could do over, nope.  Diabetes is gone, hbp gone, cholesterol normal.  Vitamins take 3 sets early in the am and 3 during the day

A few weeks back, several of us that had had WLS were together for PS consults.  Most of the RNY folks were very sugar intolerant (dumping), the sleeve girls would eat a few bites or a very small portion and that would be the end for them.  I was eating all day and all night.  Not a lot at anyone time, but every couple of hours I was ready to eat again.
