Vetted surgeons?
Hi. I'm considering a revision from RNY to DS. I have researched exhaustively, and have obviously read the many posts stating that there are only a handful of vetted surgeons. My question is this...how is it possible that these 5 or 6 surgeons have done ALL of the revisions I'm reading about? Can atone who used a "non-vetted" surgeon give me some feedback please?
I'm going to recycle Amy Farah Fowler's words from this thread here http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/revision/4635457/RNY-to-DS -Revision/, HTH:
"First of all, the specific revision from RNY to DS is tricky, and only a few surgeons can/should do it. You may find other surgeons that will do a revision, but to things that are easier for them to do, like ERNY or bob, and I'm sure you know you don't want to waste time on those. You will have to travel. The list of surgeons that can actually do this tough revision follows:
Dr. Keshishian, located in California
Dr. Rabkin, located in California
Dr. Stewart, located in Texas
Dr. Simper, located in Utah
Dr. Elariny, located in Virginia
Dr. Roslin, located in New York
Dr. Buchwald, located in Minnesota
Surgeons above are in the US, and if you are willing to travel outside the US, there are the surgeons below:
Dr. Baltasar, located in Spain
Dr. Marchesini, located in Brazil"

I've read the vetted list many times in many different places. But it just seems logical to me, that with so many RNY to DS revisions, that these few docs aren't doing all of them. I just wanted to hear from people who used a Doctor that wasn't on the list. I do have to say that I have done my "due diligence"...this question is part of that.
It does seem amazing that these few docs are doing all or almost all the RNY to Ds revisions, but that is the reality. And you can remove Dr. Stewart from the list as he passed away last year, which was a big loss to the DS community.
there are other surgeons who do "revisions", but not RNY to DS. They will maybe tinker with your RNY, or do BOB, or whatever, which might - or more likely might not - be what you need and/or want. And there are lots of DS surgeons who will revise lap band or sleeve to DS, but not the much more complex RNY to DS.
I wish the reality were otherwise, but it isn't. And I think there would be even more demand for RNY to DS and other revisions to DS if insurance covered them, but many insurers don't cover revisions at all, and they are pricey if you have to self-pay. But more and more people are finding their results with other operations suboptimal or outright poor. Hopefully the concept of revision, and that one operation may not be sufficient for every patient any more than one treatment for cancer isn't always sufficient for every patient, will gain acceptance. It takes a lot of courage to undergo bariatric surgery and I especially admire the brave people who are willling to do it twice. Hats off to you for that, and hopefully you will get yourself to one of the few surgeons who does a true RNY to DS revision and get the help you need.

Yes, thanks for reminding me of Dr Stewart - that had slipped my mind.
