How is a high fat diet beneficial?  any symptoms that can arise from not getting enough fat in?

We only absorb about 20% of the fat that we take in.  Constipation is usually the first sign you are not getting enough fat.

We need fat to absorb certain vitamins, and also so our skin and nails don't dry out, so we have to over compensate for it. Since I have had the DS a year ago my hair doesn't have to be washed everyday because its so greasy.... That's a plus...

I feel for ya. I had long hair down to my butt. It mostly all fell out. I just have stands of my old hair that I cut to shoulder length. The rest is about an inch and a half long. Its all brand new hair except for the few long strands that I put on top of my head in a tiny knot of a bun. I look like I have a mullet. Or you can also think of the laughing skeleton head from the movie "creepshow" uhg... Yeah, Im not kidding on that one. That's what I look like... Im being patient, I knew it would happen, and that's just the way it is for now. Its just part of the journey. If you wa**** now or wa**** latter, it doesn't matter, whats going to come out will come out. The sooner it comes out the sooner the new can grow in, that's how I think of it..... Good Luck!

Your body NEEDS fat to absorb some vitamins. Good fats are good for you. Your body also needs fat to expel fat. The reason our country has so much obesity is because of the low fat lie and too much sugar. GOOD FATS are good for you in healthy quantities and your body needs them. Bad fats are bad for you. My mother has never been fat a day in her life and she swears by eating real fats. She eats a lot of it. The problem is you have to learn what real fats are. Stay away from fake oils, butters etc. Since we only absorb 20% of fat we actually need more fat so that we can absorb the many vitamins we take. You will know if you are getting too much fat because you will get weird looking fat floating loose stools.

Oh, you also need fats for brain function...I believe.

High fat is just not the term I would use. We need more fat than most people but I think there are only a small percentage of people
that are truly "high" fat.

I get enough fat in with skipping all low fat foods, not shying away from sour cream, mayo, butter, etc and  having cream cheese with crackers once
in a while. I have also started to add a teaspoon of coconut oil in my morning tea. Mostly to see if  I can notice a difference. In essence my diet mirrors
what I imagine a regular diet was before the whole "low fat" craze.

If your fat deficient you will have trouble absorbing the fat soluble vitamins ADEK. You have to have some fat in your body to allow the
process of absorption to take place.  I don't know how they test for this.  I think it is pretty rare.

Here is a link to an article that lists a bunch of symptoms. The only thing I have seen for sure is the absorption of ADEK gets harder.

Think about diets in general and the misery factor.  Is there any diet worse or harder to stick to than low cal, low fat, low carb.  Now there's misery for you.

We eat high fat because fat and protein are free foods for us.  Most of us don't sit around eating sticks of butter but we don't avoid fat and use real mayo, butter, cream, etc.  Read the label on all those low fat chemical concoctions they sell us.  Usually they replace the fat with sugar and salt to make it edible!  And we have low cholesterol too.  What you don't absorb can't hurt you.

I have had the most success in this entire journey (4 years) keeping a paleolithic type lifestyle.  I eat SOME fats but not a high fat diet.  The fats I take in are those in the coconut oil, avocado, olive oil families.  I eat lean meats, fresh veggies, keep all starchy veggies to a minimum and small amounts of dark berries.  This has been an incredible adventure to learn more about food by what is made by the earth.  I feel so much better knowing exactly what is going into my body.  I have had minimal gas, regular BMs, AMAZING energy without the need for coffee.  The ONLY thing is that I do still drink my protein powder after a workout to ensure I'm getting enough protein in during the day since I can't take in enough with food.

I think everyone tackles this surgery differently.  This is a trial and error type lifestyle.  We have guidelines, percentages of absorption but we are not all built the same.  Things work differently for some than others.  If it's not working... change it... if it IS working... work it!
