7 weeks out, can't lose weight. Dr did BPD instead of BPD/DS. Help

Hello folks,  this is my first post and I need some help support.  I had a RNY in 1997 that never worked that great.  I lost 50lbs but over the years it came back.  I got approved for revision surgery at the beginning of 2014 after waiting almost 1 year going Thur the insurance hoops.

I got approved for the DS or specifically the BPD/DS based on recommendations.  I just got my surgery records and I found that the surgeon only did a BPD.  Basically just made the limb longer.  Why I am so frustrated is that besides the water weight I lost in the first 2 weeks, I haven't lost any weight.  I am so upset and can't I went thru this for nothing.  I haven't lost anything in 5 weeks and I am 7 weeks post op.

I tried to ask the surgeon at the last visit but he just got upset and defensive and said to only weight myself every other month.

I am also bummed that the insurance approved the correct surgery and I didn't get it, would they approve another one?  Any help would be appreciated.. Al

So who is your surgeon?  Sounds like you got an ERNY....not good.  Did you read the consent form you signed day of surgery?  Did you get a copy?

I'm very sorry you have to deal with this.  RNY to a true DS revision is the most difficult and technical of all revisions and only a handful of surgeons in the US can truly to it.  Who have you called?  With your situation, I would only be calling Keshishian or Rabkin in CA, but here is the list of US surgeons that we recommend:

Dr. Keshishian, located in California

Dr. Rabkin, located in California

Dr. Simper, located in Utah

Dr. Elariny, located in Virginia

Dr. Roslin, located in New York

Dr. Buchwald, located in Minnesota

I know that you said Dr. Davidson was defensive and argumentative in the office visit, but what was his reason for not doing a full DS?  Did he even give you one?  He needs to if he did not.  Keep on him and make sure you get a copy of your medical records from his office and a copy of the operative report.  This will be important for you to have.

You are still early out.  What does your diet look like and what supplements are you taking?  Are you having any complications?

I contacted Fernando Bonanni, MD  in PA near Philly.  When I talked with their office they said the same think as you. I wish I would have found this forum prior.   I did get the surgery report and all the did was extend the bypass to 100cm.  All he said when I asked him was  "the original bypass was short" and that this would fix everything. When I asked about not losing weight, he told me to weigh myself every other month.  He said the BPD is the same thing as a DS in a RNY revision because I have a smaller pouch.  I see from this forum that is not true.   I also haven't read any DS patients that didn't lose weight there first 7 weeks.

No complications except for bad diarrhea, besides that I don't feel any different.  Still hungry, still can eat a lot, doesn't feel like they did anything.

My my diet is 1000 cals a day with at least 90 grams of protein, walk 1.2 miles a day.  I know I am only 7 weeks our but very frustrating to get on the scale every week and not lose any weight.

Do you think insurance would cover a second surgery?

Don't know about the insurance.  You'll have to call them and explain the situation.

Try an elimination diet for the diarrhea.  Low low carb and high protein.  You are going to need to increase supplements as well.  Are you taking calcium citrate?  You should be taking 2000 mg per day.  That can help firm things up.

Would the elimination diet help with weight loss too?  You I just drink nothing but protein shakes for a few weeks?   Would that help. Hopefully I can get the surgery redone.  I am trying hard not to get depressed and give up...  Thanks for your guidance.

Don't give up...fight.  The elimination diet can help with weight loss I am sure.  Low carb will be your friend.

So sorry Cowboy about what happened. Keep fighting insurance if you have to and SEEK legal advise. I had 3 surgeries, all for DS, first 2 were incorrect. I finally got my behind to California to Rabkin and he fixed me. I am doing great and approaching 1 year from my last revision. FYI on insurance. I had to jump thru their loops for each surgery, but in the end since I met the requirements for WLS, all 2 were paid for except for deductibles and travel expenses. It was totally worth it. Keep fighting.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I really need it right now.  I will keep fighting.  I just feel a bit beaten down and stupid at the correct time.  It is nice to know that others had to get their revision revised. I think a real full DS is my answer just got to figure out how now.
