Considering DS
I went through this same decision 2yrs ago, and backed out from the DS surgery out of fear of the "what if". Since I've had my open RNY in 2003, I've lost a total of 80lbs, and have gain it all back except for 11lbs. I'm seriously considering the DS again. I've met with the nutritionist today and also had my stress test. No surgery date yet. I would like to ask those who have had the revision from the RNY to the DS, would you all recommend this procedure to someone needing to loose at least 100lbs? Part of me is ready, while the other half is afraid, what if I don't take in enough protein, what if....
Any advice would be helpful.
There's a list of RNY to DS surgeons here http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/revision/4630043/Current-l ist-of-RNY-to-DS-revision-surgeons/
You should also check out DSfacts.com Getting in 100g of protein a day is doable, just make sure you get your protein in first. You can always throw in a protein shake if you're not quite at your protein quota for the day.
Check out majormom's daily bites and vites thread to see what people are eating - we do pretty well on protein on that thread.

Yvonne, your prior RNY complicates your situation greatly. There are only a few surgeons who do revisions from RNY to DS. It's a very complex and challenging surgery with significant risk. It is necessary to take apart the entire RNY, put your stomach and small intestine back together the way they were originally, and THEN do a complete DS. It can be done, but you really need a very experienced DS surgeon who does these revisions on a regular basis. It's also more difficult to get insurance coverage for revisions. Check your policy yourself - don't trust what someone tells you over the phone, read the policy yourself to see what kind of coverage you have for revisions AND for the DS.
Also, beware of surgeons who will offer you something called distal RNY or ERNY, which they may tell you is "just like DS" or "just as good as a DS". It isn't the same at all. Distal RNY has not been shown to provide better weight loss than the proximal RNY you almost certainly have now, and ERNY (the E is for extended) gives weight loss but with more nutritional problems. It is not as high risk as a true revision to DS, but not as good, either.
I hope you are able to get your DS, and also hope your story will help inform others who are still making their decisions and facing those "what ifs" that sometimes when you make one choice, it makes later choices much more difficult or even impossible.

Thank you all for your honest posts. If I go through with this procedure, it would be with Dr. Wade Barker of Barker Bariatric in Dallas, TX. Dr. Barker is probably one of the better well known revision doctors in Texas, so I feel pretty confident that I would be in great hands. I have had the EGD done last week, and my pouch is still small, so that is a blessing, which means it doesn't need any work done to it. Now I will check with UHC and see what they say on this matter. Again, thank you all for sharing.
NO, NO, NO!!!! RUN!! HE IS NOT A REVISION SURGEON! Refer to the list above. ONLY use a surgeon from that list. RNY to DS is a highly complicated revision surgery and only a handful of surgeons in the US will do a TRUE revision.

Yvonne, I live in Dallas and was originally planning on using Dr. Barker but after reading reviews from others and doing some research, I realized that he may not be the best surgeon for a DS revision from a lap band, let alone from RNY. Here in Dallas we do not have very many options since the passing of Dr. Stewart. I was not a 100% comfortable with Dr. Barker to begin with and felt like I was settling. The reviews here forced me to dig deeper and find another surgeon (all the way in Europe) with whom I felt more comfortable. I would urge you to do some research - maybe even start with Dr. Ayoola (Dr. Stewart's partner). No matter the outcome, what others say (and they will be opinionated about Barker) and who you choose to go with I hope you are very comfortable. Good luck.
