DS for Kaiser patients?

Hello!

I've been doing research for months on what type of WLS would be the best decision for me, and I have my heart set on DS. I have an appointment with my pcp on 04/22 to see if this would even be an option for me and I just had a couple questions for those of you with Kaiser insurance just to get a feel for whats ahead of me.

I've read about some insurance providers requiring 6months to 3 years of supervised weight loss classes before being considered for this surgery, what is the waiting period for Kaiser?

I've also seen a lot of good reviews for Dr. K in Glendale CA, if i get approved will my surgery take place at Kaiser or can i choose any surgeon and get covered?

Thanks in advance!

Your question is more complicated than you think. I will send you a pm with some questions and some info.

Great job, though, on doing your own research! Kaiser does not inform people of the existence of the DS, which means not many Kaiser patients realize what a great option it would be for them - or, if they choose another option, at least that it would be a well informed decision.

Are you in Southern California? I had my DS through Kaiser on 9/27/12 in SoCal, and would be happy to share my experience if you wish to PM me.

I'm a pre-pre-opper, but know that you can file a grievance against your insurance company if you do not wish to do the weight loss before being approved for surgery. Here's a link to an OH post from 2009 on what to do. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/CA/3939972/Dont-want-to-do -the-pre-op-diet-10-weight-loss-other/
