6 Months Lab Results - Question about Vitamin A & D

I have had low D & A.  My D is fine now & I take 1 - 50,000 dry Vit D per day.  My Vit A on the other hand has been a problem.  I started with Vitalady's DS recommendation of 100k per day & my numbers tanked.  I upped it to 150k per day & they still were below normal.  I have now been on 225k per day for the past 5 months & my numbers are finally in the very low normal ranges.  Also, when I moved my dosage from 150 to 225k per day...it only moved my level up by 7 points...so instead of being at 34...I am now at 41.  I have another blood draw in Aug & will see if this continued high amount keeps increasing my A level.

Hi! I am a pharmacologist (not an MD).  I will not comment about your levels. However, I did want to point out that Vitamins A and D are both liposoluble vitamins.  Meaning the dissolve in and travel with fats and oils.

If you ware thinking about increasing your dose, you may want to consider changing the time you take you A&D and with what. For example, taking A&D with a salad having a vinegar and oil dressing would enhance the dissolution of your Vit. A and D and enhance its absorption.  Another approach, would be at dinner with a fatty fish (like salmon) or a meatloaf with some fat in it.

Increasing the dose may not be that helpful if you dont increase your ABSORPTION of the vitamins.

Just my two cents....

Thanks for the info! I agree that increasing dosage will do nothing if I don't absorb it it the first place! :)

Do you know if this apply even with taking the dry form of both of these vitamins?

And does the fact that DSers only absorb 20% of the fat calories we eat change things?

One suggestion my dietitian recommends is taking the stubborn vitamins during the middle of the night when it isn't competing with anything else. I worked on copper and K1 that way. Not at the same time, but for about 6 months on one and then the other one.

I'm leery of taking any vitamin with oil for those of us with a DS. 80% malabsorption of oils and fats would seem to mean if you mix a vitamin with an oil, it would go right out of our systems along with the oil. What would be the point of us needing to take dry forms of vitamins? Perhaps a whey protein isolate shake? Nice absorbable protein... Maybe there's a connection.
