LOW PROTEIN LEVELS
I went to my surgeon on Wed. for my 1 year check. The plus side is that I am down 112 lbs in 1 year- which isn't bad for an old lady and a revision at that . My vitamin levels were all good with the exception of my protein level. My surgeon said it needs to come up. Unfortunately I didn't ask for numbers as I had so many others things I needed to discuss and just lost my focus I guess.
My question is what is a good way to get my protein levels back up to where they need to be. I watch the bites and vites to see how you do it but am thinking I need to do a little more to get on track. I am also noticing that I may have some hypoglycemia issues. I have terrible night sweats and am somewhat nauseated during the day. I heard that it can be common with those who have weight loss surgery. Is that also true with the DS? I didn't have any problems until I had my hernia repair and tummy tuck. I mentioned it to my surgeon but he didn't seem to think it was the issue. Any thoughts would be really helpful.
Increase the amount you're currently taking - how much is that BTW? Also try some of the more bio-available forms of protein such as the ones below:
whey blended products, BV 100-159
whey, BV 104
egg, BV 100

If you do shakes then you might consider doing double scoops. I haven't seen the evidence but some people say first thing in the morning or last thing at night might be helpful to get as much a boost as possible. Eggs are always a good go to. Maybe some lunch meat between meals during the day might help the nausea. Are you still tracking liquids? Could the nausea be from dehydration?
Nausea should not be happening. I would double check that. You just did your labs, so what was your fasting blood sugar level? What was the avg blood sugar level? The night sweats sound more hormonal to me, but if it is blood sugar related then eating protein or drinking a protein drink right before bed time will help you get through the night.
I'm guessing that you don't have a protein number goal to work towards every day. I've read most people here do between 100 to 120 every day. Many do 120 just in shakes, then eat more on top of that. You really need a number to work towards, otherwise you are floating adrift without a compass and then you get surprised by your labs. Try 130 gms of protein each day, from food or shakes, and see if that doesn't bring it up to acceptable levels in 3 months.
Good luck and take care.
