pre-op liquid diet question?
Hi Everyone!!! I will be having my surgery on march 10th and was wondering how well everybody manages there liquid diet before surgery. Tomorrow will be my first day,of 14,not sounding fun already! Just wandering for those of you who have gone through it what you guys got by with on your lists.lists. I'm figuring I will use protein shakes etc. just curious. This is my first post however I have been reading all the info on here all year. I guess I'm fixing to become part of the DS family so figured I would get to asking. As for me Im 41 years old weigh 460 pounds been overweight since I was seven years old. Very excited to get on the road to my new life! Any info is greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks- Mike Andrews- Greenville Texas
Hello!!! I can tell you that I am on the last day of my pre-op diet, as I have surgery tomorrow! Apparently each dr. Has different requirements for pre-op. Here is what I cal tell you... The first few days are kinda aweful... I found days 2,3, &4 to be the worst. I was hungry, irritable, and had what was literally the worst headache of my entire life! I also had a little bit of constipation. Ok so now if I've scared you, read on... It gets better. Your body will adjust! I'm a bit hungry, but it's not too bad!!! Definitely manageable!!! Drink lots of water! You'll feel like "yeah right, tha****er isn't gonna fill me up!" But try, drink it, it helps! As far as protien shakes go, I love the premier protein shake in chocolate! It's pretty good when it's REALLY cold. It has 160 calories, 5 carbs., 1 sugar, and 30 grams of protien. You can get it at costco, BJs, and giant. The other thing that helped was watching movies or DVRed tv so you can avoid the food commercials. I didn't talk to people about food and avoided being with others while they are and prepared food. Good luck!! Stay strong!!!
Thank you so much!!! guess I can do anything for 2 weeks!!!! only 13.5 days left now!!! LOL I am going to get those shakes today!
I also wanted to tell you good luck with your surgery!!!! I hope you will let me know how it goes!!!-mike
Welcome and congrats on your surgery date!!! I know the liquid diet can seem daunting - and honestly, the first 3-4 days are pretty rough. But I just told myself that I had done lots of crazy diets before and I can survive ANYTHING for two weeks. :)
also - know that losing weight now helps your surgeon. So stay focused on that!
I slept a lot the first couple of days of my liquid diet - but I didn't have to work so I had that luxury. It helped me deal with the initial hunger and headache. Drink as much water as you can stand - it will help. And although they might not sound fabulous now - sugar free Popsicles really helped me. I could have those and sugar free jello, along with protein shakes. So I did. :)
best wishes for a successful surgery!!!!
Melanie
Thanks Pete! Im taking your advise on the shakes! You have already encouraged me from some other posts I read of yours. I am at about same weight as when you started and feel you can probably relate to alot of the things going on with me as well. You are doing great!!! Ready for my surgery to get me going!!
Welcome! Good for you. I hope you have an uneventful surgery. My Doc gave me a choice between several commercially available products pre-op. I ended up doing my pre-op drinking Boost Glucose control. If you've never been on a liquid or high protein diet before the first couple days can be rough but then your body adjusts. I mostly found it hard to get my head to agree with my body. :)
