Going back to work tomorrow

Tomorrow I'll be 4 weeks out and my first day back to work since my DS.  I've lost 32 pounds so far YAY!  My husband and mom say my weight loss is noticeable but I don't see as much of loss as they do.

I work with a lot of nosy-body women who like to back stab and talk about everyone.  I don't want them to know I had WLS...it's none of their business.  I've decided to tell them (if they ask me about it) I've been eating 800 calories a day and exercising 3-4 hours a day.   I was wondering what others have told people how they lost weight that don't want their WLS publicized.

Congrats on your weight loss!! You are doing great! Good luck heading back to work! I told most people BUT if I worked with the crew you do .....I would say "just making healthy choices and hitting the gym"

I felt like that in the beginning, like I wanted to keep it to myself. Then as my body changed and I lost weight, and had no appitite, I felt like a walking commercial. It was a miracle to me to finally have control of myself, that was the part that I have embraced the most is the control I have now, not the weightloss as much. I was telling everyone. Now I still feel that way, but I wished I would have kept it to myself. Accept for with people that have a weight issues I don't mind sharing with them at all, but with others you can tell they don't really understand in the first place, so then you find yourself defending the surgery, and why you chose to do it, and then they still don't understand. Even relatives that have seen you struggle, "and mean well", can say the most stupidest things. It can be irritating after awhile, and tiresome. It takes a good thing that your happy about, and puts negativity into it. So I say if I had to do all over again, share with the people that it can help, and know where your coming from, and with the others, "ITS NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS", and not up for debate.......

I said I had to have my gallbladder out and was nauseous from recovering from the anesthetic. Once the healing period was over, I said I was so happy after losing a little weight after the gallbladder surgery, that I was keeping up on exercise and eating 6 small low carb meals a day.

Also, maybe you aren't as paranoid as I am, but this site can be a small world at times and I didn't feel comfortable posting any public pictures or my last name where anyone could do a simple google search with my first and/or last name or an image.

I had two sisters who died from cancer. so I told my family because I didn't want them to think I was sick. Now I tell anyone who asks how I lost so much. It's a personal decision either way.

Hi, sounds like your doing well!! Keep up the good work. I haven't had my surgery yet but I am very open person so I figure that when I'm asked I will tell. I think I will have a military style policy... Don't ask, don't tell. I really believe it's just personal preference. Best of luck to you.

No one at my job knows about my surgery.  It took a long time before people commented...probably at least 80lb lost.  I just dodge the question most of the time and then quickly change the subject.

So it would go something like this...

coworker: "you sure have lost a lot of weight.  How are you losing it all?"

Me: "i've made a lot of changes.  You look great too, (add random compliment here)"

99% of the time, it worked well and people dropped it.  A few times people would then follow up again with questions about the weight loss.  I would just give very random answers like "I've made a lot of changes, but one of the hardest was giving up soda".  People seem to take that as enough of an answer.  No one has pressed me beyond that point.  When I'm asked a more direct question like "what do you eat?"  I tell them that I really changed my eating habits and eat much lower carb and drop it.

I do think some people were a little suspicious, but once I got past that drastic drop in weight, people quit asking about it.  Now my weight is just my normal and no one asks me anymore.  I'm thankful I stuck to it and didn't tell anyone.  I don't think anyone would have been rude about it, but I feel like it's none of their business and I cannot stand people judging what I eat.  And I've seen that happen with a RNY co-worker where people analyzed every morsel she put in her mouth.  NO THANKS!

What is the reason that you are giving for having been out of work for four weeks?  I was so excited, I told anyone I could tell that I was having the surgery both before and after.  I have had nothing but support and encouragement.  If your co-workers are back stabbers, they will make comments even if they know about it.  Of course, everyone has their comfort levels about the information being made public, but I'm not sorry I made mine public.  Having the people notice my weight loss is nothing but wonderful.
