What should I expect after DS?
Hello everyone. I am new to OH and the forums. I am waiting for insurance approval for DS. I have heard all kinds of things about what to expect after surgery, but hope to get more information from people who have already undergone DS. One thing I heard is that some people have "odor" problem after surgery. Have any of you experienced this after effect? I would welcome information about facts and fiction of after effects from DS surgery. Thanks in advance for your help.

im 3 weeks post op and in no pain at all. I've had 2 c sections before and they were alot worse. my surgery was done around 3pm and by 11:30 pm i was up and walking. so pain for me wasn't an issue. the odor your talking about is from bowel movement?? there is a different smell but there is some stuff you can buy at the store kind of like an oil you can put in the toilet before you go that helps with the smell.
You should except to lose most of all of your excess weight, and to be able to maintain your weight loss if you avoid consuming too many carbs. If you have type 2 diabetes, you should expect it to resolve - permanently - unless it is severe and longstanding, but even then it should improve greatly. You should also expect the highest chance for resolution of almost every other comorbidity.
You should expect, after a recovery period of course, to be able to eat small but otherwise normal meals without fear of dumping. You should expect to need vitamins and mineral supplements for the rest of your life. You should expect to need to put protein first in your diet and eat plenty of it for the rest of your life.
Oh wait - you meant about odors and all that - but I decided to put the important stuff first. Yes, you will learn that some foods will cause nasty smelling farts. You will learn to avoid those foods if you are going to be around anyone. If you avoid those foods, you are unlikely to have a problem. The odor business is real but overstated. And the DS doesn't cause BO.

I know people took the odors comment to be about bowel movements but some people get a bad BO or breath from ketosis caused by the low carb high protein diet. This usually goes away or you can get rid of it by slightly increasing your carbs. I think it is part of ketosis for some people. Is that waht you were asking about? It's not really a DS thing, it could happen to anyone following an Atkins diet..
Fiction - people have an odor after DS. I've read of some who say they had one. I have met a few dozen DSers over the years though, and not one of them had an odor.
Fact - poop stinks. It should be a no-brainer, but DS poop is a special kind of stink. Much has to do with what you're eating or NOT eating.
Fact - loose stools. This doesn't mean diarrhea. It means no straining and **** floats. It's not a big deal. Sometimes its more like liquid, but I'm under complete control. No crapping my pants. I have a giant poo first thing in the morning, and I'm done for the day.
Fact - malaborption- this is a good thing. It's part of the metabolic change our body undergoes. Food types are absorbed by the body differently, and fat becomes practically a free food.
Fiction - malnutrition - It takes due-diligence to keep healthy, but malabsorption does not equal malnutrition. Take your vitamins and understand your lab levels. Never accept by a medical assistant that your labs look "okay". Know the difference and know why. You can learn a lot from the wisdom shared out here.
