Excessive Hunger

Hi All,

i had the bpd ds surgery in 2010 and I lost about 120 pounds.  But now I am excessively hungry.  I can eat a 20oz steak and be hungry 1 hour later.  I'm considering two options after talking to my drs.  Hgh therapy or revising my stomach to be smaller.  I'm taking all the vitamins and my blood work is not bad.  But it's frustrating because I am ALWAYS hungry!

anybody have any advice?

If you can swing it, I'd look into re-sleeving your stomach. The DS is supposed to be a restrictive and malabsorptive surgery. You need both working together. Use protein shakes to ward off some of the grazing, but you shouldn't be able to eat that much in one sitting. Keep us posted.

Ive heard of people shrinking their sleeve or pouch by doing a liquid diet for a week.... they do it to of course get some retention back. I don't know how this would go over if your already starving to death all of the time. Just thought I would mention it...

I personally think it is really important to think of what is going on in your mind rather than your tummy.  Are you REALLY hungry?  Are you bored? Thirsty?  It is a safe assumption that if you are able to eat a 20 oz. steak in one sitting then you have absolutely stretched your pouch.  Before going to the intense options the basic option needs to be tackled and that's your mindset.  Where you always able to get in that much food since day one of having surgery?  How did it get to that point?  What choices are you making that may not be DS friendly that you might not be completely honest with yourself about?  Do you track your calories?  Everything you eat?

The liquid diet for a while to shrink your stomach back a bit is a good idea.  It sounds from your success to-date you know what to do and you know how to use the DS as a tool.  Maybe you should go back to basics for a while before jumping into a drastic decision.

I know these things might be tough to hear and even to think about.  I also had my surgery in 2010 and I find that sometimes I get too confident in myself and what I can eat instead of listening to my DS and it becomes very easy to forget that this is a TOOL not a quick fix that will make everything better.  We still have to make the necessary lifestyle changes to help our DS help us.

I hope this helps!  Good luck!

Dr. Advice, is the same as yours.  He wants me to cleanse go back to basics and then to if necessary revise to make the stomach smaller.  I've been sick the last 14 months and atrophy is setting in.  Two Drs have suggested hgh for building muscle for 12-24 weeks.  That will build muscle and curb hunger.  As for the other issues of being hungry all the time..I didn't know before the surgery. But I am a stress eater.

thanks

Good god!  I'm 8 years post op and can barely kill off a 5oz steak.  I'd be suspecting that they forgot to sleeve your stomach or something.  In the meantime, when you're hungry again, fill up on protein.  Carb eating creates crazy cravings.  I know from personal experience.  A few days of protein-loading helps get me back in control.
