My dog Zoie.............
I work in at animal control and we also have an animal shelter and so this makes me really happy to read your post. Owning a Pit Bull is not for everyone. I tell people that they need to have thick skin because people will judge you and your dog. I beg them to go to training classes including Canine Good Citizen classes, do lots and lots of people/dog socialization because their dogs need to help change others perception. I ask them to help their dog be ambassadors for the breed so that people will see them for the beautiful and loving dogs they are. The more people that see a well behaved, well socialized dog, the more people will adopt them. Even sharing your story here helps!
When a small dog jumps on people to say hello people don't mind but if a Pit Bull does that then the dog "was trying to kill them." We often get the calls that there is a vicious Pit running around trying to kill everyone. 95% of the time it's a face kissing, tail wagging, lap dog. We get safe and dangerous dogs of all breeds. I always feel sad for the Pit Bulls in our shelter every time a bad news story comes out on Pits. I know that they will be there another month minimum. They CAN get more selective on their dog friends as they age so it is important to keep them socialized to other dogs.
Congratulations on your beautiful Zoie. You look like a match made in heaven and from someone who is in the trenches daily fighting for their lives, I applaud you!
Cheers,
Cathy
