Is a 36 bmi enough for DS?

I had RNY GB in 2005, lost down to 130 pounds from a pre-op of 275. However now I weigh 200. So considering a DS, but wondering if I would lose too much weight?  Ideally I like 135, I think if I lost down to near 100 it would be too much for me.  My BMI is approx. 36, is this enough to have a DS? Any advice, suggestions, thoughts?

My surgeon seems to think so. I have a BMI= 38, with 6 co-morbidities. Of course, your insurance company will be the last word on it. Call them and ask for the actually policy--they emailed mine, all 50 pages of it!

Good luck!

The real key here is that you consult, at least by email, with one of the few surgeons who does RNY to DS revisions. This is the most complex and high risk bariatric surgery being done, and very few surgeons do it. I don't know where you are, so not sure who to recommend first, but the list includes Dr. Rabkin in San Francisco, Dr. Keshishian in the Los Angeles area, and Dr. Roslin in NYC. There are a few others, not many.

and as someone else already said, get your insurance policy and read it for yourself. Don't trust what some employee tells you over the phone.

PS there is a lot of great general info about the ds at dsfacts.com

Thanks for those responses!  Yes, I got lots of information from DSFACTS.  I am in Texas, but I would travel out of state.

I had a RNY to DS revision and at the time I weighed 108 lbs..... Currently I struggle to maintain 150.... I went to Dr. Keshishian in CA. He can and will make sure to the best of his ability that you are healthy and not loose to much weight. He is an exceptional surgeon and one of the only few who I would trust to do this very complex surgery, as others have mentioned.

Good Luck,

I was all of a 35.2 and had a virgin DS. I got down to 121 but have since bounced back to 143 which is about 5 lbs more than I want but is still a normal BMI.

IF you are self pay, you should have no issue. If you are going thru insurance, you will need a comorbid or two to qualify but the cut off WITH comorbids is 35 and according to Medicare, you qualify for ANY of the four (including the DS).

Come visit us on the LW board...several of us are DS'er's!
