Does one dehyrdate easier after the DS and do you have to avoid certain exercises?

I know that immediately after surgery its important to hydrate but once you about 3 months out or so do you have to get in a certain amoutn of water? I have heard some folks say if they don't drink enough water they get kidney stones. What has been your experience? Also, can you work out heavily after the DS surgery or do you risk getting a hernia or bowel obstruction more easily? Just wondering as I would like to start working out not to long after surgery.

In the beginning, the only exercise recommended is walking.  You will have lifting restrictions for quite a while.  I would avoid all ab exercises for probably 6 months.  Same thing for heavy duty working out.  Too much is core exercises and yours were just rearranged.

As far as hydration goes it takes a couple months to figure out how to eat and drink.  Once you know you are keeping yourself hydrated effortlessly, you should be OK.  Some people say they are more prone to dehydration postop but I have never seen any differences.

I started out walking 5 miles a day.  Did that for quite a while then I started running.  It's painful for me to do AB work because I do have a hernia.  I got it from coughing when I was about 6 years out.  Darn it!

You got a hernia from coughing?? Holy cow! Does this surgery make us more easily prone to future hernias? I've seen quite a few folks with hernias post surgery.

Any person who has had abdominal surgery has a higher risk of getting a hernia. But lots of people get them who have never had surgery too.  It CAN happen to anyone.

For some people the hernia is a great thing because it lets them get the TT for cheap.  I wish I could get mine fixed but no $ for that unless it becomes a real problem.

I see. I have never had surgery before so I was not aware of this.

If you work out too soon, then your chances of hernia will increase. I did not work out after surgery, but still developed a small hernia from "normal" activity. If I do choose to do abdominal workouts, I will worsen the hernia, and ultimately need surgery. If I don't work that area of my body, I could be fine for years and years.

Thus, it is very important to follow your surgeon's guidelines and don't work out until they feel that your stoma*****ision is fully healed. I should mention I was an open DSer and not a lap.

As far as dehydration....I was a huge water drinker before my DS. Now, I have to force myself to remember to drink water. I have no idea why the urge to drink is gone. I do know that if I start feeling poorly, my first thought is to ask myself if I've been getting enough water. That is almost always the culprit and is fortunately, easily correctable. There is no reason one cant workout after being fully healed from surgery.....many do. You will just have to keep yourself fully hydrated.

64oz daily is the rule for fluids.  Hernia's are easier, I think.  I got one 1.5 yrs post op refusing to wait for help lifting a bag of soaking wet topsoil (I had to plant tomatoes that very moment, don't ya know?).  It as right along the incision that the hernia appeared, too, so yeah, baby yourself a little.  I also learned taking yoga that certain core muscles just refuse to cooperate, but it wasn't until then that I really noticed anything different with me (I'm 8 yrs post op)

I just want to be able to actively participate in all sorts of sports after the DS-volleyball, basketball, softball, kayaking etc...It would be a shame to be small enough to participate yet not be able to participate because of susceptibility to hernia.  I also want to be able to get my body in shape as I lose so I'm hoping I won't be too restricted.

I have been doing setups since month 4ish to 5. I started yoga three days ago.

As far as water goes the first three months I was so dry mouthed I drank constantly. Now I do not get as dry mouthed as I use to but I still get no less that 48 ounces a day. I always aim for 64 ounces though.

I kayaked the Amazon with no problem.  And there was another time I was running about 50mi per week.  I've done just about everything I could think of and I'm still here.  I rode a horse across Mexico and hiked a bunch of rainforest.  Went rappelling.  There's nothing I can't do if I want to bad enough.
