after surgery question....

My surgery is in 2 weeks... and I have been planning and preparing and just wondering how all of you did the sleep recovery thing... I know I have read a recliner helps.... did all of you use a recliner? I do not have one and do not believe we have a rental place near us... All bedrooms are upstairs and the only rest spot in my house is the couch... is that doable? I have had three other surgeries (gallbladder, exploratory surgery, and a c-section) in the past and never had a recliner...  BUT I know this surgery is a big one.... is it doable without the chair to sleep?

Did you all have issues climbing the stairs? My daughters room is on the 2nd floor, My sons is on the third floor.... both are little and I normally tuck them in... are stairs option... am I crazy to think I may be able to climb them?

It depends on how you feel. I had no need for a recliner or anything special post-op. I could climb stairs and get into my bed with no problem.

I had my surgery done lap so there were no huge incisions.

I was absolutely miserable after my surgery. I wasn't even expecting to sleep on the couch but I had to for a minimum of two weeks sitting straight up with pillows all around me. I could take it really really slowly and go up the stairs I just couldn't lay down flat to sleep. You might be able to tuck the kids everybody is different of course. I wish I had thought to rent a recliner it would have made life so much easier that first month but oh well. Good Luck and hoping you have a smooth and speedy recovery!

Thank you so much for the replies... thinking I will play it by ear then... I know in the past every surgery I had went smooth no issues and I was walking the same day... even my c-section the Dr signed off for me to walk because I was so antsy to get out of bed... Fingers crossed I will have a smooth surgery and no major issue and lap incisions...

Ohh geez I hope I did not just jinx myself...Forget everything I said about a smooth recovery..... lol

I was done lap, have 7 little incisions, and had no problem sleeping in my bed or climbing stairs.

Your history speaks volumes...you have had several smooth recoveries, so why would you expect anything less?

This is encouraging to me, as well.  I'm a pretty tough ol' broad and I've had some major and minor abdominal surgeries. I have never even thought to get a recliner for recovery. All my bathrooms are upstairs, so I guess I won't have a choice about it--I"ll be going up and down the stairs several times each day.

Hmmm, DH has been wanting a recliner. Perhaps this year is the time to get it...

Some of it may depend on your usual sleeping position. I sleep on my side and that was very uncomfortable for me after the surgery.   I could have propped myself with pillows but the recliner was more comfortable. I'm not sure why I could sleep on my back in the recliner but not my bed - maybe it restricted my turning just enough.

Having said that I think if you were OK with your other surgeries you shouldn't be any different with the DS.

I only have a couple of stairs in my house and as long as I was careful to go slow they were not a problem.

Good luck.

I slept on my stomach every night when I got home. I crawled into bed very slowly and laid down slowly to put the pressure on my stomach a little at a time. I also used a body pillow to prop me up on my side a little some nights. I was super stiff some mornings when I got up but I know I slept better than I would have sitting up.

I did fine without a recliner. I also have had. Two sections and the recovery from them was worse than the recovery from the sleeve and DS. As fr as stairs, you should really ask your surgeon about this. Sme have stair restrictions and some don't. GL

You all are great! Thanks! If the Ds is similar to a c-section I think I will be fine... I was able to care for twins, sleep in my bed and climb stairs slowly.....I guess I was just worried the DS was going to be worse than the c-section. I was blessed with a easy recovery with that. I never really had much pain just gas pain in my shoulder ... Maybe I was just in baby bliss and do not remember pain hahaha
